About the Role
The Community Energy Educator will assist with teaching energy efficiency and clean energy education programs in the Southern Tier Region, focusing on Broome County. This role involves working with residents, building owners, and small businesses, particularly in low-to-moderate income and priority communities, to inform them about clean energy options. The position also supports program implementation, evaluation, and relationship building with community partners to address energy inequities.
Responsibilities
- Assist with teaching energy efficiency and clean energy education programs.
- Work as a team member on a regional team.
- Provide input on the implementation and evaluation of energy programs.
- Inform residents, multifamily building owners, and small businesses about clean energy strategies.
- Establish and maintain relationships with community partners and local stakeholders.
- Deliver information and education in various settings, including community events, food pantries, and large presentations.
- Make one-on-one phone calls and follow up with leads/clients.
- Assist clients with navigating applications for energy efficiency and clean energy programs.
- Troubleshoot obstacles to adopting clean energy strategies.
- Coordinate with local energy contractors to provide accurate program information.
- Coordinate and implement educational programs with community groups, energy contractors, supervisors, and team members.
- Assist with training, engaging, or coordinating volunteers and interns.
- Serve as a subject matter resource for energy efficiency.
- Carry out administrative tasks to support the educational program and fulfill funding requirements.
- Utilize established program resources and materials.
- Use various delivery methods including workshops, public events, articles, web pages, and social media.
- Teach clean energy education programming per established Plan of Work.
- Represent the regional energy team professionally to the public and community leaders.
- Adapt materials to meet local community and individual needs for diverse audiences.
- Assist in maintaining linkages with Cornell and other SUNY institutions.
- Engage volunteers and interns in program delivery.
- Respond to questions about energy efficiency.
- Cooperate with the Association and regional energy team to achieve program delivery goals.
- Interact with program participants to gather informal program evaluation information.
- Interpret evaluation information and assist supervisor with recommendations for improvement.
- Implement program evaluation as designed.
- Communicate evaluation findings to constituents.
- Help establish priorities, objectives, and programming for the Clean Energy Program.
- Assist in planning public events and program activities.
- Assist in identifying opportunities for fund development activities.
- Assist in directing/organizing community focus groups and/or advisory committees.
- Foster effective professional relationships with other agencies, organizations, and businesses.
- Recruit and support interns and volunteers.
- Direct the work of interns based on supervisor priorities.
- Identify and recommend program needs (supplies and materials).
- Train interns and volunteers.
- Collect, compile, and submit information for narrative and financial reports.
- Collect budgetary information and relay to supervisor.
- Assist in gathering information for grant/contract proposals.
- Support administrative needs of writing grant/contract proposals.
- Develop and pursue a professional development plan.
- Collaborate in activities supporting Cornell Cooperative Extension.
- Support the association in maintaining a safe working environment.
- Follow applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education (Associate’s Degree and 2 years of transferrable program/functional experience).
- Experience teaching non-formal educational programs, with a preference for experience in energy efficiency and renewable energy, or related topics.
- Experience in social work with an emphasis on housing/energy assistance.
- Experience assisting low-income households receive subsidized housing services.
- Experience working independently and as an effective team member.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to build relationships with diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate an inclusive and supportive environment.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new information and communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual means.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple priorities.
- An earnest desire to empower households and communities to create change.
- Matching patience to move at the speed of trust.
- Valid NYS Driver’s License and ability to meet travel requirements.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and/or weekends.
- Experience establishing and working with community stakeholders, especially those with limited income.
- Experience working with, and assisting in developing institutional relationships in Tompkins County.
- Experience working as a volunteer or supervising volunteers.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, teach, and evaluate informal educational programs.
- Aptitude for digital technologies and strategies for educational and communication applications.
- Empathy, sincerity, and an ability to find a silver lining when faced with challenges.
