About the Role

The Secure Detention Counselor Crisis Response Team is responsible for creating a safe, therapeutic, and caring environment for youth in a secure detention setting. This role supports the smooth functioning of the facility by coordinating and implementing orientation, training, and supervision of Detention Counselors and other subordinate staff, ensuring accurate documentation, and overseeing the intake process. The position may act as a shift supervisor when assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Uses therapeutic and crisis prevention models to role model, teach, and help youth learn de-escalation skills.
  • Provides direct supervision of youth, maintaining visual observation, monitoring well-being and conduct to prevent critical incidents and ensure safety.
  • Maintains a therapeutic culture that encourages positive, respectful, and supportive interactions.
  • Supervises overall safety and security procedures and responds to critical incidents using de-escalation interventions before resorting to physical restraint.
  • Completes necessary follow-up reports following critical incidents and emergency situations.
  • Follows mandated report requirements for reporting potential child abuse and neglect.
  • May provide supervision during family and other approved visitation.
  • Monitors resident phone calls as needed.
  • May provide supervision of residents admitted to an area hospital.
  • May ensure staff and visitors participate in checkpoint screening.
  • May conduct random and scheduled facility and outside perimeter security checks.
  • May manage all security control room functionalities and pod control, including access, movements, camera systems, and intercoms.
  • Monitors the fire control panel.
  • Completes the intake packet, ensuring appropriate paperwork is received for admission.
  • Screens referrals for appropriateness based on received information.
  • Performs pat downs and strip searches, reviews the youth handbook with youth, and provides them with a copy.
  • Acts as the on-shift supervisor when assigned, ensuring the safety and security of the shift.
  • May be a member of the rapid response team.
  • Supervises, counsels, and instructs facility residents in daily living, recreational, and/or educational activities.
  • Provides informal guidance and counsel to youth.
  • Manages challenging behaviors through de-escalation techniques and positive behavior supports.
  • Ensures adherence to facility policies and procedures.
  • Assigns staff to their post for the shift when acting as supervisor.
  • Acts as a lead when assigned to a pod, ensuring the program schedule is followed and managing issues.
  • Maintains narrative log records of shift activities, including shift changes, resident movements, population counts, incidents, and room checks.
  • Reviews all log records for the shift for accuracy.
  • Ensures all critical incident reports and other paperwork for the shift are completed fully and accurately when acting as supervisor.
  • Shares responsibility for maintaining a clean and sanitary environment.
  • Responsible for rotating chore list when working the overnight shift.
  • Coordinates with other professionals such as educators, Case Managers, Clinicians, and Nursing.
  • May participate as a team member in implementing appropriate treatment strategies for facility residents.
  • May co-facilitate group counseling sessions with a Case Manager or Clinician.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED with 4 years of experience in child welfare, juvenile justice, or youth residential or secure facility; OR Associates degree in human services (or equivalent) plus 2 years of experience working within child welfare, juvenile justice, or youth residential or secure facility.
  • Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving history.
