About the Role
The Group Teacher creates a safe, structured, and enriching environment for school-age children in the YMCA of Yonkers School Age Childcare program. This role supports youth development by delivering engaging activities that promote academic success, character development, and positive relationships, while collaborating with staff to maintain a safe and nurturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Ensure health, safety, and well-being of all children through active supervision and adherence to OCFS ratio requirements
- Plan and implement structured, age-appropriate daily activities supporting literacy, STEM, arts, SEL, nutrition, fitness, and cultural awareness
- Facilitate homework help, enrichment activities, and academic skill-building
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming program space; set up and sanitize materials as needed
- Lead weekly or seasonal projects such as showcases, group initiatives, or culminating events
- Support children’s social-emotional growth using positive behavior guidance and strength-based approaches
- Promote inclusion by accommodating diverse learning needs and supporting children with IEPs or individualized plans
- Assist with snack/meal service and promote positive, family-style dining experiences
- Maintain accurate documentation including attendance, incident reports, sign-in/out logs, and developmental records
- Participate in required trainings, drills, and OCFS professional development requirements
- Collaborate with Site Coordinator and staff to ensure program consistency and safety
- Build strong relationships with parents and caregivers through communication and engagement
- Represent YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all interactions
Requirements
- Must meet one of the following: Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and at least one year of experience working with children; Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education and three years of experience; Child Development Associate (CDA) certification and enrollment in an OCFS-approved study plan leading to an Associate’s degree within two years
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- CPR, First Aid, and AED certification required or ability to obtain within 30 days
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse children and families
- Strong interpersonal and classroom management skills
- Experience in afterschool, school-age, or youth programs preferred
- Must meet all OCFS eligibility and fingerprinting requirements
- Ability to actively supervise children indoors and outdoors
- Ability to move throughout program space and participate in activities
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
- Flexibility to support different sites or assignments within the SACC program
