About the Role

UCSF Health and GoHealth Urgent Care are seeking a Medical Assistant to assist in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of an urgent care provider. This role involves managing patient check-in, registration, taking vital signs, and preparing treatment rooms. The company emphasizes patient needs and a welcoming culture.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of an urgent care provider.
  • Manage the check-in and registration process.
  • Interview patients and measure vital signs.
  • Record patient information on charts.
  • Draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Prepare treatment rooms for examination of patients.
  • Conduct patient registration, including securing paperwork and insurance documentation, and verifying insurance and patient eligibility.
  • Process co-pays and schedule patient appointments.
  • Coordinate provider referrals to specialists.
  • Answer patient questions regarding their care and keep them informed of their status.
  • Inform technical staff of patient flow.
  • Prepare patients for examination, including conducting interviews to verify patient information, record medical history, and confirm the purpose of the visit.
  • Perform preliminary physical tests (blood pressure, weight, temperature, etc.) for vital signs and escalate critical cases to the provider as needed.
  • Conduct point-of-care testing as needed (e.g., flu, strep, urinalysis, ECG, HCG) and provide patient information to the provider.
  • Stock supplies and maintain exam rooms, front desk, and reception area.
  • Ensure providers have necessary medical supplies.
  • Complete order sheets to maintain supply inventory levels and check expiration dates on supplies.
  • Maintain medical records and scan charts to patient files.
  • Answer phone calls, collect and sort daily incoming and outgoing postal correspondence.
  • Ensure the reception area is well-maintained.
  • Conduct courtesy call-backs for patient follow-up.
  • Perform opening and closing duties, including cashing out, end-of-day communication, and securing the building.
  • Follow operating instructions to perform and document daily controls and calibration of equipment.
  • Maintain Quality Assurance/Quality Control logs for equipment.
  • Troubleshoot equipment breakdowns, perform preventive maintenance, and submit repair tickets as needed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Graduate of a Medical Assisting Program preferred.
  • Medical Assistant experience preferred.
  • Front Desk experience preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required at the time of hire, obtained through the American Red Cross (ARC) or American Heart Association (AHA).
  • One of the following certifications is required (or must obtain within 15 months of hire): CCMA, CMA, RMA, NCMA, NRCMA.
  • In lieu of an approved MA Certification, the following certifications are accepted at the time of hire: Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing or LPN or RN, EMT, CNA.
  • In the state of California, MA's must hold: 1) Graduate of MA school needed + Certified OR, 2) MA must receive additional internal training either by graduating from MA school or receive training under Physician, NP, PA, etc.
