About the Role

The Shops team is building Mercari's B2C marketplace, extending the person-to-person marketplace to businesses selling directly to customers. This role focuses on building backend features for Mercari Shops and M Department, which share backend services. The position involves owning feature areas end-to-end, designing APIs and data models, writing tested code, and participating in code reviews and on-call rotations.

Responsibilities

Build and ship backend features in Go across product details, catalog, checkout, and order and seller management.
Own a feature area end to end, from design to decision.
Design APIs and data models, ensuring clear contracts for dependent teams.
Write readable, well-tested code and participate in code reviews.
Help operate built systems, including joining the on-call rotation and resolving incidents.
Keep documentation and runbooks current.

Requirements

A solid software engineering foundation with experience building and shipping backend code.
Comfortable in at least one programming language, willing to work mainly in Go.
Familiarity with API design (gRPC or REST) and relational databases such as Postgres.
Experience with testing, code review, and version control.
Ability to work in a team and communicate ideas clearly in writing.
Curiosity about AI tools and openness to using them daily.
Professional experience building and running backend services in production (preferred).
Production experience with Go (preferred).
Experience operating services on a cloud platform (GCP and Kubernetes), including on-call and monitoring (preferred).
Some experience contributing to system or API design decisions (preferred).
Familiarity with e-commerce or marketplaces, or backend experience in another domain (preferred).
Comfortable working on early-stage products with evolving requirements (preferred).
