About the Role
The North America (NA) Chief Reserving Actuary will lead the NA Reserving function, responsible for thorough reserve analysis, maintaining adequate reserves for a $20 Billion reserve base, and transparently communicating results to stakeholders. This role identifies key elements of reserve analysis relevant to future business decisions, manages a large team, and builds strong relationships with business leaders.
Responsibilities
- Provide an independent assessment of the NA reserves and associated reserve risks, ensuring adequacy and accuracy.
- Ensure use of accurate, sound, and innovative approaches in projecting and setting reserving guidelines consistent with Global Risk Solutions (GRS).
- Communicate quarterly reserve analyses to NA leadership.
- Lead and develop a NA reserving capability that is technical and commercial-minded.
- Be an inclusive leader committed to mentoring and developing team members for senior actuarial and business leadership roles.
- Provide proactive insights sought by business leaders.
- Identify key trends, areas of uncertainty to monitor, and macroeconomic factors impacting the business.
- Collaborate with underwriting, pricing, claims, and finance to develop a common view of the business.
- Partner with stakeholders to identify emerging trends impacting results and propose timely corrective actions.
- Apply innovative approaches and leading-edge tools to analyze the business.
- Ensure data quality and consistent application in the reserving process.
- Foster a culture of technical rigor, transparency, and consistency.
- Execute a governance framework ensuring consistent application of reserving guidelines and compliance with internal operational control, external regulatory, and audit requirements.
- Collaborate with the broader actuarial organization and other strategic business units to share knowledge and advance the business.
- Seek opportunities for continuous process improvement and streamlining.
- Stay informed about new reserving methodologies, trends, product/tort reforms, and external issues.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Demonstrated expertise in financial management of a P&C business.
- Ability to participate effectively on the senior management team.
- Strong analytical skills with solid understanding of all casualty actuarial techniques, standards, and assumptions.
- Expert knowledge of insurance operations and P&C insurance business.
- Excellent management and communication skills.
- Strategic thinking and ability to set direction for team.
- Demonstrated ability to exchange ideas and convey complex information clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to anticipate senior management concerns, integrate different perspectives, and respond accordingly.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills required to establish and build effective relationships within and outside the organization.
- Ability to give effective training and presentations to senior management and other groups.
- Demonstrated ability to organize, lead, and get work done through others.
- Ability to develop staff and managers to support succession planning and address ongoing talent needs.
- Ability to build and manage talent across the enterprise in conjunction with peers.
- Demonstrated ability to exert influence over senior managers, operating managers, and others on matters of importance to the SBU.
Skills
- Fellowship in the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) designation required, or comparable actuarial education/designation combined with relevant experience.
- Insurance designations desirable.

- The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
