About the Role

Modo Energy's engineering team builds the systems behind the Modo Terminal, a data, research, and agentic platform for energy market professionals. The team is growing and aims to expand functionality from data serving to enabling users and AI agents to query, forecast, and act on data directly. Engineers will join product teams (Terminal, Data, Ko, or Modelling) and own business capabilities end-to-end, including APIs, data pipelines, AWS infrastructure, and developer tooling. The role emphasizes learning quickly, working across the stack, and taking ownership of production systems.

Responsibilities

Build and maintain backend services and APIs using Django, FastAPI, or similar.
Design and operate data pipelines for ingesting, transforming, and serving energy market data at scale.
Own AWS infrastructure and deployment end-to-end using Terraform.
Build monitoring, observability, and alerting systems.
Balance shipping new features with maintaining platform health, performance, and addressing production issues.
Design internal tools like CLIs, APIs, and MCP servers to improve team efficiency and enable human and AI agent interaction with data.
Collaborate with domain experts (energy analysts, data scientists, modellers) to ensure accuracy and utility of built systems.
Contribute to the infrastructure for LLM-powered AI Analysts, including retrieval pipelines and tool-calling.
Work across different parts of the stack, including frontend or deeper infrastructure, as needed by the team.

Requirements

3+ years of professional Python experience with strong backend fundamentals.
Experience owning systems end-to-end, from design through deployment and monitoring.
Hands-on experience with AWS and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform).
Proficiency with Django, FastAPI, or a comparable async Python framework.
Experience with data pipelines and relational databases (PostgreSQL).
Expert-level use of AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar).
Ability to learn quickly and make system design decisions with good judgment.
Comfortable working autonomously in a fast-moving team, making trade-offs, and shipping code.
Experience with LLM-powered applications (RAG pipelines, tool-calling architectures, or agentic systems) is a plus.
Experience designing external-facing APIs, including versioning and backwards compatibility, is a plus.
Familiarity with data infrastructure such as Airflow, Spark, Iceberg, or Kafka is a plus.
Experience with energy markets is a plus.
