About the Role
The Residential Aide (RA) provides direct assistance, support, and care to clients residing in the shelter, ensuring their well-being and adherence to facility rules. This role involves supporting and enforcing shelter regulations while working with clients at the Kenilworth location in Brooklyn, NY.
Responsibilities
- Complete new resident intake arrival packets, exit logs, and daily occupancy forms.
- Utilize the DHS CARES system for intake check-ins and discharge conditional intakes.
- Review nightly attendance roster incident reports.
- Receive and confirm accuracy of food deliveries, reporting discrepancies.
- Distribute meals to residents and dispose of expired food items according to guidelines.
- Monitor logs to ensure clients sign the Daily Attendance Roster.
- Provide clients access to rooms and assist with room transfers/swaps.
- Collect and dispose of trash in designated areas.
- Distribute DHS notices, appointment slips, and mail to residents.
- Clean office space, microwave, refrigerator, and bathroom at the end of every shift.
- Bag and tag client personal belongings, and report room cleaning/repair needs.
- Collaborate with the Shift Supervisor to ensure a safe environment.
- Conduct hourly facility rounds to secure room doors and client belongings.
- Conduct safety checks for clients with illness or mobility issues, ensuring responsiveness.
- Immediately alert medical staff and supervisor of clients in distress.
- Rotate shifts as needed to meet program demands.
- Conduct operation unit inspections during the new intake process.
- Maintain and submit all logs (Attendance, ACS, emergency contacts, sign-in/out) by the 1st of each month.
- Create a dead file of logs for storage on the 1st of every month.
- Adhere to the dress code policy and maintain a professional appearance.
- Review completed paperwork and logs with the Shift Supervisor before the end of the shift.
- Physically check unoccupied rooms for status of readiness, repairs, and cleanings.
- Ensure clean and ready units have clean linens and towels, alerting maintenance of needs.
- Complete and submit all required paperwork (daily occupancy, exit logs, meal census, NSR, new intake, curfew violations, incidents).
- Serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner during designated hours.
- Finalize Night Signature Roster (NSR) in CARES.
- Ensure new logs for the month are in place.
- Receive and log incoming meals.
- Deliver mail during the 8:00 am to 4:00 pm shift.
- Clock in using the time clock system and onsite logbook.
- Be available for overtime when necessary.
- Work additional shifts to ensure coverage during staff absences.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Valid NYS security license must be maintained.
- At least two years of experience in Single Adult Shelters and/or Congregate Residential Services.
- Experience working with families/homeless population.
- Food Protection certification required.
- CPR/First Aid certification required.
- Must complete a satisfactory background investigation.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Must possess initiative and the ability to work well under pressure.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Intermediate computer skills with proficiency in Word and Excel.
- Ability to learn new technologies and databases.
- May be required to work long hours and a varied schedule.
- Periodically may bend, lift, and carry objects weighing up to seventy-five pounds.
