About the Role
The Manager, Health, Safety and Wellness is responsible for managing the agency’s health, safety and wellness programs and initiatives to promote employee health, safety, well-being, and inclusion. This role promotes a healthy workplace culture, collaborates across departments, and supports the agency’s overall strategy and mission.
Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and evaluate agency initiatives, programs, and training that support employee health and safety.
- Promote agency adherence to relevant health and safety legislation, organizational policies, and standard operating procedures.
- Provide expert advice and guidance regarding occupational health and safety best practices.
- Ensure regular review of existing employee health and safety programs and recommend improvements.
- Oversee the maintenance and review of documentation related to hazard and risk management.
- Oversee the agency’s involvement in WSIB’s Health and Safety Excellence Program.
- Co-chair the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) and monitor its performance.
- Oversee the investigation of workplace illnesses/injuries and provide recommendations.
- Support agency Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) initiatives and participate in pandemic planning/response.
- Act as a key resource for emergency response on matters related to employee health and safety.
- Collect, analyze, and report on data to determine organizational trends in support of health, safety, and wellness policies.
- Support the Accreditation Canada review and audit process.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate agency initiatives and programs that support employee health and well-being.
- Ensure regular review of the annual Wellness at Work Strategy and Action Plan.
- Oversee the management of the agency’s existing health and wellness programs.
- Oversee the agency’s group benefit plans for each employee group.
- Liaise with external partners to coordinate wellness activities.
- Manage the agency’s involvement in Excellence Canada’s Healthy Workplace Standard accreditation program.
- Recommend improvements for wellness programs based on employee feedback.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate agency initiatives and programs that support employee inclusion and belonging.
- Ensure regular review of the annual DEI Strategy and Action Plan.
- Oversee the development of communication strategies to raise awareness of DEI efforts.
- Investigate and address instances of bias, discrimination, hate, and/or harassment in collaboration with the HR team.
- Track and report key trends related to incidents of hate/discrimination to the DEI committee.
- Stay informed on industry best practices, trends, and legal requirements related to DEI.
- Oversee the day-to-day administration of agency workplace illness/injury claims.
- Oversee and update the agency's Return to Work Program, Processes and Policies.
- Oversee the tracking of WSIB incidents and report key trends.
- Make recommendations and prepare employee communications focused on prevention.
- Utilize WSIB tools to analyze illness/injury rates and identify hazards.
- Liaise with legal representation to dispute ongoing claims and participate in WSIAT hearings.
- Consult with employees about their time off balances and provide support to management related to employee time off.
- Provide guidance on the interpretation of HR policies and processes related to absence management.
- Identify key trends related to employee absences and recommend solutions.
- Keep informed of provincial and/or federal support programs for employees on leave.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to the team.
- Ensure the HR team is aligned with achieving health, safety, and wellness goals.
- Model leadership attitudes and behaviors consistent with agency mission, vision, and values.
- Develop and sustain a workplace culture that embodies open communication, a person-centered focus, learning, innovation, accountability, teamwork, and respect.
- Celebrate team successes and support employee recognition and rewards programs.
- Promote team effectiveness and address morale, cooperation, and productivity issues.
- Build support for agency vision and departmental goals through communication and collaboration.
- Build rapport with team members to ensure a high-performing team.
- Highlight the connection between agency strategy and day-to-day activities.
- Collaborate with other internal and external stakeholders.
- Work with other departments to achieve organizational goals.
- Actively participate with the HR team, providing solutions and support.
- Lead and/or participate in cross-functional project teams.

- Participate in maintaining a safe workplace environment.
- Participate in all health and safety training initiatives.
- Take proactive action against client incidents within scope of practice.

- Investigate adverse events by performing a root cause analysis.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in Human Resources with a focus on employee health and safety, DEI, and workplace wellness.
- At least 3+ years of proven leadership experience.
- Experience in the non-profit sector, unionized environment, and community health care is an asset.
- Strong working knowledge and experience in WSIB Case Management.
- Comprehensive knowledge of current Ontario Health & Safety legislation and related regulations.
- Experience working with HRIS systems (Dayforce).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.) including Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive.
- Proven ability to meet deadlines, lead and balance multiple priorities.
- Demonstrated ability in leading, coaching, and mentoring a team of direct reports.
- Experience in presenting and collaborating with Senior Executives.
- Proven capability in identifying problems and contributing to value-added solutions.
- Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, organization skills, presentation skills, and ability to multi-task.
- Exceptional customer service skillset and mindset.
- Team player with strong written and verbal communication skills.
