About the Role

Installs, maintains, operates, and repairs building systems such as pneumatic/electric, electronic, and electro-mechanical controls, refrigeration, air conditioning, and related heating and ventilation (HVAC) systems. Utilizes specialized testing and diagnostic equipment and works with control technicians to maintain building systems integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, maintains, repairs, instructs, advises, and mentors employees in the operation and maintenance of Campus Energy Management Systems and H.V.A.C. systems.
  • Acts as a first responder for inspecting, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing all control systems in conjunction with building HVAC, hydronic, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Provides preventive maintenance services on control systems and refrigeration units, documenting work performed.
  • Utilizes computer programs to operate, maintain, calibrate, and adjust building HVAC systems for energy efficiency.
  • Maintains and develops operational, procedural, and emergency response standards for control and air conditioning/refrigeration systems.
  • Assists Engineering staff in drawing review, inspection, and troubleshooting for new HVAC, refrigeration, and controls equipment.
  • Operates a University-owned vehicle around campus.
  • Practices and promotes excellent customer service.

Requirements

  • Massachusetts Refrigeration License.
  • Minimum three (3) years in the HVAC and refrigeration trade (Industrial, Commercial arena) or an Associate’s degree with a technical major and two (2) years in the trade.
  • Possession and maintenance of a current and valid class D Driver’s License.
  • Metasys Facility Operators Certificate - must complete certification within one (1) year of hiring.
  • CFC certification.
  • Knowledge of the installation, construction, repair, and maintenance of Chillers 30 ton and larger.
  • Skill and knowledge in the operation of pneumatic/electric, electronic, electro-mechanical, software program controls systems.
  • Skill and knowledge of building control systems in context with HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Skill and knowledge in the air conditioning/refrigeration field with technical competency in absorption, centrifugal, and reciprocal units.
  • Skill and knowledge to respond promptly to resolve control, air conditioning, and refrigeration system deficiencies under any conditions without supervision.
  • Skill and knowledge to interpret blueprints, schematics, and elementary diagrams associated with HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge of safety practices, preventive maintenance practices, and the operation of standard testing equipment.
  • Skill and ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of basic plumbing.
  • Ability to operate pneumatic, electric, electro-mechanical, and computerized controls systems effectively.
  • Ability to diagnose improper chiller operation and/or maintenance practices and initiate or complete repairs.
  • Ability to field upgrade control systems and mechanical equipment without technical assistance.
  • Ability to accept and implement new technology through training and evaluate training needs of new employees.
  • Ability to analyze and relate to the unique needs and concerns of Campus Customers.
  • Ability to coordinate various trades harmoniously to complete multi-trade tasks.
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, specifications, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • Must wear university clothing when supplied.
  • This position is designated as essential and on call, including obligation to work overtime, return to work between shifts, and report during delays/closures.
