About the Role
Perform independent analysis for commercial loan requests for new and existing Commercial Lending relationships of a moderate to complex nature. Evaluate and make recommendations to approve, deny, or offer alternative structuring solutions. Monitor an existing Commercial Lending portfolio to ensure timely completion of renewals, annual reviews, and modifications, as well as timely and accurate risk rating. Prepare written analyses and summarize underlying risks, recommending risk ratings. Identify and document deviations from Commercial Loan Policy. Review analyses performed by Credit Analyst staff and incorporate into overall risk assessment. Recommend and approve credit decisions within established authority. Ensure adherence to all applicable laws, regulations, and company guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Ensure underwriting for all renewals, extensions, annual reviews, and new requests in assigned portfolio are completed accurately and timely.
- Establish and maintain relationships with current and prospective customers.
- Leverage customer knowledge to proactively identify and recommend opportunities to cross-sell additional loan and non-credit products.
- Monitor reports for the assigned portfolio, including maturing loans, financial exceptions, annual reviews, post-closing and documentation exceptions, financial covenants, and past due loans.
- Perform detailed analysis and quality underwriting of moderate to complex loan proposals for new and existing customers.
- Proactively and independently analyze and structure proposals and complete the underwriting and evaluation process.
- Identify loan structure alternatives and make recommendations on credit decisions.
- Be the final decision maker on credits within individual lending authority.
- Ensure compliance with credit policy and underwriting requirements.
- Demonstrate understanding of the Bank’s overall portfolio mix, concentration and exposure limits, risk philosophy, stress modeling, and other quantitative risk modeling factors.
- Perform in-depth projective financial analysis, including 'what-if' scenarios, using automated and manual analytical tools.
- Conduct thorough annual review of current portfolio clients, including review of financials, site visits, and assessment of general business information and risk indicators.
- Perform analysis of secondary sources of repayment such as collateral, assessing quality and source, and applying discount factors.
- Perform analysis of a guarantor's financial position through investigation of personal financial statements and tax returns.
- Exercise a high level of review authority over own work and work of less experienced staff.
- Ensure own work and reviewed work of lower-level staff complies with applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines.
- Maintain overall credit quality of the region’s loan portfolio by proactively identifying the impact of current economic and market trends.
- Take appropriate action to mitigate and control risks.
- Discuss and review covenants and overall assessments with reviewers and establish turnaround/delivery requirements.
- Participate in customer meetings to provide expert analytical counsel and credit perspective.
- Prepare comprehensive written analyses for loan proposals.
- Assign a credit risk rating.
- Prepare in-depth loan package with detailed analysis and recommendations for presentation to reviewers and/or Management Credit Committee.
- Attend Management Credit Committee to provide input and answer questions regarding credit analysis.
- Ensure compliance of all required documentation and adherence to loan terms and conditions.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, agency guidelines, and organization policies.
- Provide approval authority for commercial loans as specified by Loan Policy.
Requirements
- Demonstrated knowledge of commercial lending process including credit evaluation and underwriting ability.
- Proven ability to make independent credit assessments.

- Ability to accurately interpret lending policy and apply it to portfolio management.

- Ability to understand client industry and its general fit to portfolio parameters.
- Working knowledge of banking regulations and laws governing commercial lending.

- Ability to effectively communicate financial analysis detail in a clear, concise manner.
- Ability to establish and maintain professional internal partner and external client relationships.
- Strong organizational skills with ability to set priorities in a multi-task environment and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel.
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of credit and customer information.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or Economics, or equivalent work experience.
- 5+ years of experience in commercial credit lending environment.
- 3 years progressively responsible experience in credit evaluation, portfolio risk assessment, and underwriting.
- Ability to operate a computer.
- Ability to communicate in order to exchange simple to complex information with individuals and groups.
- Ability to travel throughout Bank footprint.
