About the Role

Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer is a world-leading global law firm committed to helping clients achieve their goals through exceptional client service and the pursuit of excellence. This role is part of the GC&R team, focusing on data and technology legal issues within a global context.

Responsibilities

  • Advising internally on legal issues related to data and technology at pace.
  • Understanding how data is captured, utilized, located, and stored across the firm.
  • Developing internal policies and processes for data issues, including retention and deletion.
  • Preparing and delivering guidance, tools, and training on data use, location, access, and security to drive compliance.
  • Advising on laws and professional obligations concerning data collection, use, maintenance, location, and retention.
  • Assisting practice group, Business Services teams, and Senior Leaders with data-related decisions, identifying challenges and opportunities.
  • Working with the firm’s AI Governance team to develop standards, frameworks, and processes for data in AI systems.
  • Maintaining focus on own portfolio while possessing transferable skills to support the wider team and developing a broad skill base.

Requirements

  • Technically-astute qualified lawyer with experience or keen interest in new technologies, digital transformation, and data.
  • Experience with developing laws, regulations, and best practices related to data.
  • Strong knowledge of data privacy laws.
  • Ability to grasp complex legal issues across jurisdictions and communicate solutions practically.
  • Decisive, pragmatic, and commercial approach.
  • Minimum 3 years PQE.
  • Qualified in a common law jurisdiction.
  • Motivated to manage complex data issues and drive organizational change.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for liaising with lawyers and business services groups across seniority levels and offices.
  • Desire and ability to work across time zones and cultures.
