About the Role
The Radiation Therapist is an essential member of the Radiation Oncology team, functioning as a direct patient care provider in the Radiation Oncology Center. This role is responsible for administering prescribed radiation therapy treatments, understanding complex medical prescriptions, and working under pressure. The therapist must communicate clearly, be task and detail-oriented, and provide quality patient care tailored to diagnosis and treatment needs.
Responsibilities
- Accurately and efficiently reviews and/or administers daily prescribed Radiation Therapy treatments.
- Observes and adheres to all department policies concerning Radiation Therapy treatment procedures.
- Prepares room and equipment for patient by gathering all necessary equipment, supplies, and setup devices.
- Sets appropriate treatment unit parameters.
- Activates the treatment unit and delivers the prescribed dose of radiation.
- Maintains visual and/or audible communication with the patient during treatment.
- Obtains appropriate port films on patients when prescribed; makes adjustments in field placement as needed.
- Monitors patients for unusual reactions and events, and reports same to Clinical Director and Radiation Oncologist.
- Keeps immobilization devices in a clean and orderly manner and utilize the devices as prescribed.
- Maintains current knowledge of therapeutic procedures performed in the Radiation Oncology Department.
- Possesses basic knowledge of Radiation Oncology equipment function to provide for minor repair and troubleshooting.
- Proficient in the utilization of all Radiation Oncology equipment in the department including CT(s).
- Utilizes appropriate body mechanics in moving/lifting patients and equipment to prevent injury.
- Applies safety principles in the performance of position responsibilities.
- Records Radiation Oncology charges as procedures are performed.
- Keeps records of machine down time and maintains machine fault list report.
- Assists Supervisor in placing and scheduling service calls.
- Ensures proper hand off of responsibilities once their task is completed.
- Ensuring that all medical records are accurate and complete within the system for all patients.
- Performs other position related duties as assigned.
- Complies with and assists in complying with all applicable laws and regulations, including the Solaris Health Code of Conduct and HIPAA.
- Maintains the confidentiality of patients' protected health information.
- Immediately reporting any suspected concerns and/or violations to a supervisor and/or the Compliance Department.
- Timely completion of the Annual Compliance Training.
Requirements
- One (1) year certificate from college or technical school in Radiation Therapy certified by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
- Certified by American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (AART) and American Society of Radiologic Technologist (ASRT).
- BLS certification required, ACLS preferred.
- License and certification as required by state.
- Knowledge in healthcare systems operations such as EMR.
- At least six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of database management.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Customer-oriented with ability to remain calm in difficult situations.
- Delivers exceptional patient service throughout all interactions.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Skill in using computer programs and applications including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to build relationships with patients and display empathy and compassion.
- Ability to work independently and manage deadlines.
- Complies with HIPAA regulations for patient confidentiality.
- Complies with all health and safety policies of the organization.
