About the Role

The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) supports Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PLM) by performing pre and post-analytical testing functions. These include specimen procurement, processing, data entry, media preparation, sterilization, clerical duties, and loading specimens on analyzers. The role emphasizes positive patient identification and accurate specimen handling. Duties may vary based on laboratory needs, potentially requiring rotating shifts, weekend/holiday work, and off-site travel. MLAs must adhere to safety and infection control procedures, work independently, use good judgment, maintain professionalism, and provide excellent customer service.

Requirements

Must have successfully completed the Medical Laboratory Assistant examinations of the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS)/Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professional Regulators (CAMPLR)
Must have current registration with CSMLS
Must have Licensure with Nova Scotia Regulator of Medical Laboratory Sciences (NSRMLS)
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Basic understanding of medical terminology
Strong attention to detail
Manual dexterity to handle sharp instruments and small objects
Ability to adapt to updates/changes in operating procedures
Basic computer skills
Access to reliable transportation as travel may be required

Skills

Meditech experience is preferred
Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
