About the Role
The Daily Mail is seeking a tech-literate and forward-thinking Editorial Innovation Intern to join its cutting-edge Innovation Team. This role is for an early-career journalist excited about how new technology can enhance journalism or someone from a tech background pursuing a career in media. High performers will learn future-facing skills and have a clear pathway to a permanent full-time role. The intern will join the new Innovation Team that designs, tests, and ships AI tools for journalists via Mail iQ, a suite of AI-powered tools.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Innovation Team to design, test, and refine new AI agents and utilities within Mail iQ.
- Work on flagship journalism projects to build custom datasets using AI by analysing complex records.
- Use bespoke software to translate existing Daily Mail reporting into dynamic audio/visual formats, social assets, and other media for global distribution.
- Engage with subbing, pictures, graphics, design, social media, and data desks to identify workflow friction and build solutions.
- Research new technological developments and translate them into usable information for journalists.
- Help run hands-on training sessions to empower reporters and editors to adopt new tools.
- Ensure AI workflows uphold the Daily Mail’s rigorous editorial standards, enforcing human-in-the-loop oversight.
Requirements
- Early career status: A recent graduate, or in the early stages of a tech, media, or product career.
- A deep practical understanding of LLMs, prompt engineering, and generative AI platforms.
- Exceptional capability to learn, evaluate, and master new software and digital tools at speed.
- A genuine interest in current affairs, pop culture, sport, global events, and the future of media.
- Evidence of an interest in the intersection of technology and journalism, preferably with a portfolio of work (project, blog, GitHub, newsletter, or side hustle).
Skills
- AI-assisted coding (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot)
- Data analysis, Excel/Python, or creating interactive visual assets (charts, maps, timelines, graphics)
- Building light automations or integrations (e.g., via APIs, Zapier, Make, or custom scripts)
- Basic editing skills in visual or audio software (Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Figma, or AI multimedia generators)
- Explaining technical concepts to non-technical colleagues
