About the Role

The Head of Engineering Programmes role is a key postholder in our academic management structure, involving academic leadership and line management for the entire Engineering portfolio. The core responsibility is to ensure Engineering programmes meet OfS B conditions of registration, focusing on quality of teaching, learning, and assessment, while assuring an excellent academic experience for students and aligning the portfolio with sector standards and professional accreditation requirements.

Responsibilities

Oversee the academic and operational delivery of Engineering programmes in line with OfS B conditions of registration and relevant accreditation requirements.
Ensure a consistent and high-quality academic student experience.
Monitor, review, and drive enhancements to the teaching, learning, and assessment of Engineering programmes.
Ensure all assessment processes (marking, moderation, external review) are delivered appropriately and to the required standards.
Develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the academic quality and professional relevance of the Engineering portfolio.
Liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective and efficient programme management.
Recruit, develop, and manage academic staff, including Programme Leaders and Lecturers.
Manage key academic staff, which may include Programme Leaders, Senior Lecturers, Lecturers, and Associate Lecturers.
Ensure newly appointed academic staff receive a suitable academic and operational induction.
Provide communication, guidance, and support to all programme academic staff.
Liaise with other Heads of Programmes, Programme Leaders, and Senior Lecturers to ensure staff receive appropriate guidance.
Ensure line-managed staff have clear objectives, personal development plans, and receive annual performance appraisals.
Identify staffing needs and allocate staff to timetables to ensure balanced workload and appropriate resourcing.
Engage in recruitment and marketing activities related to the programme.
Ensure all aspects of Engineering programmes comply with the Academic Regulations for Taught Programmes.
Oversee programme web pages, handbooks, and specifications, ensuring they are up-to-date and staff are briefed.
Ensure constructive alignment of programme learning outcomes with module learning outcomes and assessments.
Ensure programme and module changes comply with modification and validation procedures and accreditation requirements.
Oversee content development, learning and teaching, assessment, marking, moderation, academic staff, and processes to meet academic quality standards.
Liaise with registry, quality, and partnership staff to ensure programmes are managed appropriately and Examination Boards run smoothly.
Oversee exam board preparation meetings, university examination boards, committee meetings, quality/partnership/accreditation review meetings, and chair programme committees.
Ensure implementation of college and partner University policies, plans, and procedures, including the Learning, Teaching and Assessment Plan.
Oversee and liaise with the academic manager for timely and accurate production of meeting papers.
Facilitate student registration on the programme.
Oversee the student induction process, liaising with relevant colleagues and support services.
Ensure student representative selection processes are effective and that training and support are provided.
Manage student queries that have not been satisfactorily resolved elsewhere and ensure students are appropriately supported.
Oversee student attendance and engagement monitoring and action plans.
Ensure the requirements of students with Student Support Plans are met.
Contribute to the staff-student liaison committee and report key issues.
Ensure Engineering programmes and students' experience are consistent with OfS B conditions and relevant PSRB accreditation requirements.
Be responsible for Annual Monitoring reports, Programme Action Plans, and periodic reporting.
Lead Periodic Programme review and re-approval.
Monitor comments from external examiners and professional accreditation bodies and ensure actions are implemented.
Assure students' experience, satisfaction, achievement, continuation, completion, and progress.
Ensure suitability and availability of learning and teaching resources.
Assure the currency and relevance of the Engineering curriculum.
Ensure both self and staff can engage in relevant research and scholarship.
Extend, transform, and apply knowledge from scholarship to teaching and draw on appropriate external activities.

Requirements

Experience in HE academic programmes' management, preferably UK.
Experience of teaching, curriculum development, and quality management and enhancement in a UK HE environment.
Experience of leading or supporting engineering programme accreditation/re-accreditation with IMechE and/or IET, or comparable Engineering Council-licensed professional engineering institutions, under AHEP4.
Demonstrable resilience and evidence of excellent management, learning, and teaching.
Evidence of a positive impact at discipline programme level beyond own teaching.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Able to communicate complex and conceptual ideas to a range of groups.
Able to demonstrate independent and self-managing working styles, with ability to work at pace and at scale.
Understanding of EDI in academic content and relating to staff and students.
Able to undertake duties at different premises including any campus as required.
Expected to be flexible at times to work outside of normal office hours as required.
Expected to engage in activities associated with promotion, marketing, and public outreach of the subject/programme area.
