About the Role

The User Trail team owns the analytics and observability platform that captures user interactions across The Trade Desk's core web applications. This event data powers product analytics and an AI-powered internal tool for investigating platform events. The role involves setting technical direction, solving complex problems, anticipating scaling needs, and driving improvements in team processes and quality.

Responsibilities

  • Help set the technical direction for unlocking data across the company through self-service tools, dashboards, and AI-powered assistants.
  • Solve complex, multi-layered problems spanning multiple platform areas, making critical tradeoff decisions.
  • Anticipate problems and scaling needs as more teams rely on the team's data and tools.
  • Proactively identify and drive improvements to team processes, tooling, and quality practices.
  • Influence decision-making by providing a strong, ROI-driven perspective on capability prioritization.
  • Develop and share expertise across multiple platform areas, serving as a guidance resource for other engineers.
  • Partner with support, trading, business, and product teams to shape future development and data exposure.
  • Welcome and foster diverse perspectives and build from common ground.

Requirements

  • Track record of solving hard, ambiguous technical problems end-to-end.
  • Comfortable being the go-to person for problems spanning multiple systems.
  • Deep expertise in backend services and/or data-intensive systems (e.g., event pipelines, data warehouse/lakehouse platforms, SDK development).
  • Ability to apply expertise across more than one area.
  • Ability to weigh technical tradeoffs against business impact and communicate reasoning clearly.
  • Ability to improve team processes and proactively drive changes.
  • Effective communication with diverse stakeholders, including non-technical partners.
  • Comfortable influencing decisions without direct authority.
  • Motivated by helping other engineers grow through mentorship, design reviews, or setting a strong technical example.
  • 11+ years of software development/engineering experience.
  • Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in computer science or a relevant engineering field, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to learn quickly and find solutions to complex problems using optimal tools.
