About the Role

Samsara’s cloud-connected sensor platform collects observations about the world in near real-time. As a Senior/Staff Embedded Software Engineer, you will develop software that runs on millions of devices, tackling challenges including hardware component evaluation, new platform bring-up, data gathering systems, and structuring data for efficient analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Shape hardware by participating in reviews with electrical engineers and evaluating component choices.
  • Bring up new platforms and prototypes from virgin silicon, configuring interfaces and debugging system initialization.
  • Own and develop peripheral drivers, secure bootloaders, and device firmware updates.
  • Design protocols and hardware management for battery-powered sensors and gateways to maximize device life.
  • Partner with product, full-stack, mobile, and quality engineers to ensure data integrity and usefulness.
  • Act as a force multiplier at the Staff level, raising the team's ceiling through designs, reviews, and instincts.
  • Shape how Samsara works, maintain a high bar, and work with urgency and iterative delivery.

Requirements

  • 8+ years building firmware for resource-constrained systems on products shipped to real customers.
  • Fluency in C, understanding compiler behavior, linker maps, stack traces, and heap corruption.
  • Substantial bare-metal and RTOS experience (Zephyr, FreeRTOS, or equivalent), with expertise in scheduling, memory, and timing decisions.
  • Experience bringing up new boards from first power-on and debugging hardware/software interfaces.
  • Fluency in low-level interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, and ADC.
  • Proficiency with bench tools like oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and RF spectrum analyzers.
  • Staff-level scope experience, leading work across hardware, firmware, cloud, and quality from concept to product.
  • Ability to trace decisions from the driver level to customer experience and make informed trade-offs.
  • Strong documentation skills, producing actionable design docs, review comments, and post-mortems.
  • Ability to iterate quickly on customer feedback with automated testing and well-written code.
  • Proficiency in using AI as part of the daily workflow to multiply output.
