About the Role
Mitti by SafetyCulture is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to manage complex architectural decisions, drive change, and own the delivery of practical solutions. This role focuses on building large-scale multi-tenanted search systems and contributing to an inclusive, high-performing interdisciplinary team.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate large-scale search across front end and back end using React, TypeScript, Golang, PostgreSQL, and OpenSearch on AWS.
- Own search relevance and retrieval quality, defining measurement and driving improvements through ranking, query pipelines, and tuning.
- Lead search architecture, including indexing strategy, hybrid retrieval, embeddings, and ranking, considering associated trade-offs.
- Build AI-native applications, connecting retrieval to LLM-powered experiences (e.g., RAG), and stay current with agentic coding tools.
- Provide technical leadership for search architecture, execution, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Own search feature delivery end-to-end, including requirement breakdown, stakeholder collaboration, and supporting other engineers.
- Articulate effort-vs-impact trade-offs and build-vs-buy decisions.
- Ensure search operability at scale, focusing on performance, observability, and cost as data volume grows.
- Drive high-performance team outcomes by setting engineering standards, mentoring peers, and improving team practices.

Requirements
- Deep search/information retrieval expertise: lexical text search, semantic and vector search, hybrid retrieval, and relevance tuning.
- Hands-on experience with RAG: chunking, retrieval pipelines, grounding model outputs, and evaluating retrieval quality.
- Proven track record building search capability into applications that retrieve information at scale in a multi-tenanted architecture.
- Strong OpenSearch/Elasticsearch operating experience at scale, including understanding segment merging and its operational challenges.
- Systems thinker capable of decomposing large problems and teaching others.
- Autonomous work style, comfortable making decisions without waiting for sign-off.
- Ability to influence product direction, not just implementation.
- Thrives in a fast-paced, small team environment with minimal formal process.
- Experience with turbopuffer in production is a plus.
