About the Role
As a Hardware Test Engineer for the robotics program, you will establish and own the test function, including rigs, instrumentation, test plans, and reliability data to ensure robots are ready for deployment. This hands-on role involves designing and building fixtures, owning failures from identification to resolution, and conducting field testing.
Responsibilities
- Design and build test harnesses, rigs, and fixtures for robotic systems from subsystem to production-representative levels.
- Develop executable test plans covering functional, durability, accelerated life, and environmental testing, including SOPs for parallel execution.
- Instrument machines and rigs with sensors (load cells, strain gauges, thermocouples, accelerometers, encoders) and manage the associated DAQ and data pipeline.
- Conduct environmental testing to characterize design limits, including high temperature, thermal cycling, dust ingress, vibration, shock, humidity, and UV exposure.
- Own root cause analysis, including failure reproduction, isolation, and collaboration with the design team for fix implementation and validation.
- Build reliability models from test and field data, estimating life, failure distributions, and required sample sizes.
- Automate test execution, reporting, and dashboards to track failures and frequency.
- Qualify machines for field deployment and collaborate cross-functionally on end-of-line acceptance tests.
Requirements
- 4+ years in hardware test, validation, or reliability engineering on robotic, vehicle, or electromechanical systems.
- Proven track record designing and building own test rigs and fixtures with CAD and GD&T fluency.
- In-depth knowledge of instrumentation and DAQ, including setup techniques for trustworthy measurements.
- Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals and structured root cause analysis methods (e.g., 8D, 5-Why).
- Experience with accelerated life and durability testing.
- Proficiency in Python or equivalent scripting for test automation and data analysis.
- Ability to exercise judgment on rig requirements, demonstrating high ownership, a bias for speed, and comfort with ambiguity.
