About the Role
As a Systems Engineer for the robotics program, you will own the machine-level picture, including requirements, interfaces, error and performance budgets, verification, and safety. You will guide robots from concept through integration and commissioning, ensuring they perform to specification. This is a mid to senior level individual contributor role.
Responsibilities
- Derive machine-level requirements from real deployment targets, such as cycle time, placement accuracy, and uptime, partnering with design engineers.
- Develop use cases and concept of operations covering machine loading, positioning, operation, recovery, and maintenance, including off-nominal cases.
- Partner with system owners to design interfaces between subsystems, ensuring integration issues are identified early.
- Build error and performance budgets to ensure machines meet specifications and hold designs accountable.
- Act as the backstop for system performance, identifying and surfacing risks and failures that span multiple disciplines.
- Plan and execute machine-level verification and validation, owning the evidence that designs meet requirements.
- Own the safety architecture for machines handling heavy loads around people, including E-stops, interlocks, and safety zones.
- Support integration and bring-up of complete machines, commission them in West Texas, and manage the feedback loop to requirements.
- Communicate effectively in writing and verbally, guiding cross-functional programs to a cohesive product.
Requirements
- 5+ years of systems engineering, systems integration, or multi-disciplinary design engineering on complex robotic or electromechanical systems.
- Cross-discipline fluency spanning mechanical, electrical, and software, with sufficient depth to engage subsystem owners.
- Experience taking a machine or vehicle end-to-end, from prototype to deployment, at the system level.
- Experience with requirements definition, flow-down, and traceability on hardware programs.
- Strong cross-discipline debugging skills using scopes, logic analyzers, telemetry, and logs, with a structured approach to fault isolation.
- Experience with cross-functional stakeholder management and driving decisions through influence.
- Proficiency in Python or similar for analysis, budgets, and tooling.
- Safety analysis and functional safety for mobile machinery or heavy equipment (nice to have).
- FMEA, FRACAS, or formal reliability program experience (nice to have).
- Field commissioning of outdoor or industrial systems (nice to have).
- Experience as the first systems hire on a program (nice to have).
- Controls background, including system identification, tuning, and performance characterization (nice to have).
