About the Role

Dedalus Labs is an AI research neolab building infrastructure for AI agents, specifically the persistent compute layer for autonomous software. This paid, full-time, approximately three-month internship in San Francisco offers the opportunity to work directly on real infrastructure, write production-quality code, and solve challenging problems alongside experienced engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Work directly alongside Dedalus engineers on real infrastructure.
  • Take ownership of tasks and projects.
  • Write production-quality code.
  • Investigate difficult problems.
  • Explain technical decisions.
  • Contribute to distributed infrastructure for large-scale AI agent workloads.
  • Contribute to persistent compute and distributed storage systems.
  • Contribute to scheduling and orchestration platforms.
  • Contribute to virtualization, containerization, and sandboxing infrastructure.
  • Contribute to reliable multi-tenant cloud systems.
  • Contribute to internal developer platforms and infrastructure tooling.
  • Contribute to performance, reliability, observability, and failure recovery.
  • Contribute to production systems operating under real-world latency and fault-tolerance constraints.
  • Build components of distributed storage systems for persistent agent state.
  • Improve the reliability or recovery behavior of production services.
  • Design scheduling infrastructure for concurrent, long-running agent workloads.
  • Investigate bottlenecks across storage, networking, scheduling, or runtime layers.
  • Build internal tooling to improve infrastructure operation and debugging.
  • Design tests simulating partial failures, machine loss, or degraded networks.
  • Improve observability for distributed workloads.
  • Prototype new isolation, caching, or orchestration mechanisms.
  • Read systems papers, implement parts, and compare tradeoffs with current architecture.
  • Own and ship a meaningful infrastructure project.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of production distributed systems.
  • Demonstrate strong technical judgment and debugging ability.
  • Respond thoughtfully and quickly to feedback.
  • Write clear code, tests, documentation, and architectural reasoning.
  • Make Dedalus’s infrastructure meaningfully more reliable, performant, or usable.
  • Provide sufficient evidence for assessment of possible long-term fit.

Requirements

  • A public GitHub profile is required.
  • Demonstrated programming ability in Rust, Go, C, C++, or a similar language.
  • Evidence of building and completing technically meaningful projects.
  • Solid computer-science fundamentals and a genuine interest in systems.
  • Ability to reason clearly about tradeoffs, failure modes, and debugging.
  • Specificity about personal contributions and decisions made.
  • High agency, intellectual honesty, curiosity, and learning velocity.
  • Strong written and verbal technical communication.
  • Ability to work full-time and in person in San Francisco for approximately three months.
  • A specific reason for wanting to work on infrastructure for AI agents at Dedalus.
  • Self-directed systems projects built beyond required coursework.
  • Meaningful open-source contributions.
  • Experience building a storage engine, scheduler, database, runtime, compiler, operating system, hypervisor, container system, or distributed service.
  • Correct implementation of Raft, Paxos, replication, sharding, or another distributed-systems concept with thoughtful testing and documentation.
  • Technical writing that explains architecture, failure modes, and tradeoffs.
  • Evidence of others using or depending on something built.
  • Research accompanied by a working implementation.
  • Experience with a project where a difficult failure was encountered and diagnosed.
  • Repeated evidence of unusually fast learning and end-to-end ownership.
  • Class projects can demonstrate baseline knowledge; initiated, extended, or pursued projects beyond requirements are stronger signals.
