About the Role

As a UX/UI Designer, you will work across various Research & Design projects, applying content skills and experience to solve complex design challenges. You will create evidence-based, user-centered services that help people achieve their goals by defining user journeys, developing prototypes, creating design patterns, and building client design systems.

Responsibilities

  • Define and map end-to-end user and customer journeys.
  • Develop prototypes from rough concepts to hi-fidelity interactive experiences.
  • Create new design patterns and modify existing ones.
  • Help build and design clients’ design systems.
  • Design services for users that struggle online, considering disability, lack of digital confidence, age, or neurodiversity to build inclusive services.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years’ commercial experience in UX and/or Interaction Design.
  • User-centred design methodology, including conceptual sketching and visualisation, journey mapping, defining UX principles, information architecture and rapid prototyping.
  • User research methods, including user needs insight and analysis, usability testing and A/B testing.
  • Fluency in mobile-first and responsive design patterns.
  • Proficiency in tools such as Figma or similar such as Gov.UK Toolkit.
  • Ability to articulate design rationale to stakeholders, receiving and acting on feedback.
  • Experience of working in multi-discipline, cross-functional teams, alongside researchers, content designers, service designers and developers.
  • Knowledge of the latest Accessibility standards and inclusive design methods, including WCAG 2.2, the Equality Act and GovUK Service Manual.
  • Working with design systems and creating common, shareable design patterns that maintain consistency for the user experience and ensure governance in delivery.
  • Ability to design at the systems level, not just the screen level.
  • A growth mindset.
  • AI curious and ready to embrace opportunities.
  • Basic front-end literacy, including HTML, CSS and JavaScript to have informed conversations with engineers (Desirable).
  • Experience working in central and/or local government, transport, justice, health, trade, water, energy and education (Desirable).
  • Understanding of the growing role and potential of AI tools in design, including prompt design, first-draft UI and code generation and designing for conversational and voice interfaces (Desirable).
  • Experience in designing services that use AI to enhance the user experience and/or using AI to develop coded prototypes from your designs (Desirable).
  • Appreciation of AI ethics and designing for trust, including the boundaries around automation and ability to review outputs for quality and accuracy (Desirable).
  • Experience working to Agile methodology (Desirable).
  • Visual / graphic design (Desirable).
