About the Role
We are looking for a backend product engineer to own the systems behind the parts of Clay our customers use every day. In this role, you will own a surface end to end, deciding what to build with design and GTM partners, shipping it quickly, observing customer usage, and then improving its speed, reliability, and capabilities. You will act as both a Product Manager and an Engineer, tackling numerous interesting problems and technical challenges.
Responsibilities
- Own a product surface end to end, from problem definition through measured outcome.
- Collaborate with design, data science, and GTM partners to scope work, write specifications, and make product decisions.
- Engage directly with customers by participating in calls, reviewing tickets, and observing their usage of Clay.
- Ship product iterations quickly and learn from customer feedback.
- Build and maintain fast, reliable systems for new product capabilities, including data models, APIs, and jobs.
- Address real-world scaling challenges as Clay's usage grows.
- Improve the performance and reliability of Clay's codebase.
- Enhance the development velocity of the engineering team.
- Mentor and learn from other engineers, sharing strengths and acquiring new skills.
Requirements
- A proven track record of execution with 4+ years of hands-on engineering experience building products.
- A desire to function as both a product manager and an engineer, driving and owning product surfaces end to end.
- Strong backend fundamentals including API and schema design, SQL (preferably Postgres), and query optimization.
- The ability to anticipate system failures before they occur.
- A bias toward impact and shipping, with a focus on learning from production environments.
- Empathetic communication skills, able to articulate nuanced ideas clearly to various audiences.
- A commitment to prioritizing curiosity over confrontation in disagreements.
- A dedication to craft, producing bug-free, understandable code and elevating the engineering standards for the team.
- A belief in the value of diverse perspectives for building a better team and product.
