About the Role
The Data Platform team at Clay builds data products that customers use directly, along with the shared systems that accelerate the development of new products. The team is responsible for creating a live map of the working world, including companies, people, jobs, and their connections, and ensuring the reliability and accuracy of this data at scale.
Responsibilities
- Decide what the data means, evaluate sources, resolve conflicts, and model entities and relationships.
- Explore and build new data products from customer problems to product experiences.
- Build the shared foundation for data landing, modeling, versioning, release evaluation, and customer delivery.
- Own how the data is served, supporting interactive search, enrichment lookups, large result sets, and alerts.
- Build with models, determining when they are more effective than deterministic pipelines and ensuring economic viability.
- Make quality a product decision by measuring coverage, correctness, freshness, and traceability.
- Build the harness to determine if model-driven decisions are good enough to ship.
Requirements
- 8+ years of hands-on engineering experience building products customers rely on.
- Proven track record of execution.
- Experience driving and owning products end-to-end.
- Experience leading ambiguous, cross-functional technical work from problem framing through delivery.
- Empathetic communicator, able to express nuanced ideas clearly for different audiences.
- Prioritize curiosity over confrontation in disagreements.
- Collaborate with others to ship high-quality, thoughtful features.
- Talk to customers, consider multiple approaches, and work with teammates to find the right solution.
- Care about craft, write clear and maintainable code, and create frameworks and reusable patterns.
- Familiarity with the current tech stack or ability to learn quickly.
- Experience building and operating production systems where data quality and reliability are critical.
- Comfortable in SQL and Python, able to reason about data models, distributed jobs, lineage, and failure recovery.
- Treat customer-reported wrong answers as your own bug, regardless of origin.
- Measure problems and improve from evidence when datasets disagree or quality bars are unclear.
- Bring evidence to Product or Data Science rather than arguing positions.
