About the Role
NALA is building Payments for the Next Billion, aiming for faster, smarter, and fairer transfers globally. This role is crucial for leading and scaling a world-class compliance and risk function to ensure safe expansion across consumer and B2B payment products, protecting customers, licenses, and reputation while maintaining NALA's required pace.
Responsibilities
- Lead and enable NALA's global group of MLROs and BSA/AML officers across the UK, EU (Belgium), US, and Canada.
- Own NALA's global compliance strategy across AML/CTF, sanctions, consumer protection, licensing, regulatory reporting, financial crime, and fraud controls for both consumer and B2B platforms.
- Act as the guardian of NALA's license to operate and a growth partner, finding compliant ways to deliver innovative financial products.
- Serve as NALA's most senior regulatory leader, building trusted relationships with regulators, banking partners, and acquirer counterparties.
- Continuously acquire and maintain necessary operating licenses, scaling NALA's US footprint and building the required US-resident compliance presence.
- Own enterprise risk management across the organization, running the framework and steering the Risk Committee.
- Lead integration and M&A-related compliance activity, including change-of-control submissions and operationalization of acquired license permissions.
- Build, hire, and lead a high-performing compliance team.
- Provide compliance input into new products, corridors, partnerships, and acquisitions to identify and manage risk effectively.
- Oversee regulatory examinations and the audit cycle across NALA's licensed entities, managing remediation of findings.
- Build the Group risk and compliance framework, including an enterprise risk management system and board-level Risk & Compliance Committee.
- Create clear, decision-useful reporting for executive leadership and the Board on regulatory and enterprise risk.
- Make executive decisions on enabling, challenging, or stopping activities, defending these decisions to regulators, the board, and acquirers.
Requirements
- Led the compliance function at a regulated fintech, payments, EMI, MSB, remittance, or banking business.
- Deep, hands-on experience with AML/CTF, sanctions, financial crime, transaction monitoring, regulator engagement, and license obligations.
- A hands-on leader capable of problem-solving and performing tasks directly.
- Emerging-market exposure, understanding the realities of business and regulators in frontier markets.
- Exposure to stablecoin, digital asset, or crypto regulatory frameworks, especially in cross-border settlement contexts.
- Experience in cross-border payments, remittance, card issuing/acquiring, banking infrastructure, or B2B payments.
- Held an SMF, MLRO, BSA/AML Officer, or equivalent regulated role, or are eligible for approval.
- Experience building compliance frameworks from the ground up, moving programs from gaps to scaled, defensible, audit-ready status.
- Multi-jurisdictional experience across at least two of: UK, EU, US, and emerging markets.
- Clear judgment on when to enable, challenge, or stop activity, with the ability to defend decisions.
- Track record advising CEOs, Boards, or ExCo on material regulatory and compliance risk.
