About the Role
This Project Archivist position focuses on unlocking hidden history at Leighton House and Sambourne House by addressing cataloguing backlogs, establishing modern standards, and sharing heritage with local communities and visitors.
Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of the 'Archives Revealed' project across two artist studio-house museums.
- Address cataloguing backlogs by auditing physical and digital records.
- Create clear series-level entries to make the archive fully searchable.
- Establish new retention, disposal, and cataloguing guidelines.
- Support migration to a new Collections Management System.
- Identify key historical material for an upcoming exhibition and public event series.
- Guide and mentor two Documentation Trainees and a team of volunteers.
- Deliver engaging talks and activities to share discoveries with the community.
Requirements
- Professional archiving or collections management qualification (MA or PGDip) or substantial equivalent experience.
- Strong working knowledge of recognised cataloguing standards like ISAD(G).
- Hands-on experience using specialised collection management software.
- Excellent, proactive communication skills.
- Ability to explain archival processes, train staff and volunteers, and work collaboratively.
- Great attention to detail.
- Solid IT capabilities.
- Physical capacity to undertake routine manual handling of archive boxes.
- Commitment to fairness, equity, and resident-focused service delivery.
- Passion for preserving local history.
- Satisfactory Standard DBS check.
