About the Role
The Deputy Superintendent of Police is a sworn law enforcement officer who serves as the senior-most subordinate of the Superintendent and leads major investigative and administrative functions of the department. This role contributes to establishing the agency's mission, vision, and core values, and involves recommending goals, prioritizing work, formulating policy, and overseeing staff development.
Responsibilities
- Staff supervision, including prioritizing and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, and identifying training opportunities.
- Conduct active personnel recruiting and make hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
- Respond to inquiries from supervisors, staff, and Nation Citizens.
- Respond to emergencies and deploy resources.
- Develop and implement department policies and procedures.
- Serve as the department’s Accreditation Manager.
- Oversee or conduct internal investigations, inspections, audits, and compliance matters.
- Communicate public safety activities and procedural changes to other Nation departments and enterprises.
- Supervise special or sensitive investigations as directed.
- Assist with developing the department budget.
- Research and recommend improvements to department tools or technology.
- Represent the Police Department to other law enforcement organizations.
- Provide guidance and mentoring to department employees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be a current or formerly certified federal, state, local, tribal or territorial police officer, special agent or criminal investigator.
- Proof of successful completion of a recognized law enforcement training academy or equivalent.
- Current or separated honorable duty status.
- No candidate decertified as a law enforcement officer by any government or municipality will be considered.
- Undergraduate or Graduate degree.
- Fifteen years of previous sworn law enforcement experience.
- At least ten years prior experience in a supervisory capacity or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Completion of advanced coursework in Police Supervision.
- Experience as a lead investigator or detective.
- Successful completion of a psychological examination.
- Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening.
- Successful completion of an extensive background investigation.
- Physician-certified as fit for full and strenuous law enforcement duty.
- Completion of onboarding training and probationary period required for continued employment.
- Eligibility for a New York State Pistol Permit.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
