About the Role
The Head of Development will be responsible for the strategic and operational advancement of the engineering department, shaping a high-performing and future-proof development organization. This role is crucial for integrating existing product lines, development teams, and technologies into a powerful, unified platform to accelerate innovation, ensure quality, and strengthen market position.
Responsibilities
- Assume overall responsibility for the strategic and operational development of the engineering department.
- Shape a high-performing and future-proof development organization.
- Integrate existing development teams, architectures, and codebases into a cohesive, efficiently collaborating organization.
- Develop and establish a sustainable modernization strategy to systematically reduce technical debt and continuously advance software architectures and development platforms.
- Oversee the overall technical architecture, define technological guardrails, and collaboratively develop the technical roadmap with Product Management, Product Owners, and Scrum Masters.
- Provide technical and disciplinary leadership to team leads and development teams, fostering a performance-oriented leadership culture and nurturing talent.
- Collaborate with team leads to further develop the engineering organization.
- Manage resources, capacities, and budgets, and continuously improve processes, methods, standards, and development tools.
- Establish modern engineering practices focusing on agility, CI/CD, DevOps, test automation, code quality, and Security by Design.
- Evaluate new technologies and AI approaches for their practical benefits in product development, engineering processes, and product quality.
- Collaborate closely with Product Management, Quality Assurance, Release Management, Professional Services, and other business units.
- Ensure compliance with relevant quality, security, and regulatory requirements in the healthcare sector.
Requirements
- Possess solid and current experience in software development with a deep understanding of modern technologies, software architectures, and development processes.
- Have several years of leadership experience in software development, with a track record of successfully managing larger development organizations.
- Demonstrate proven success in transforming and advancing development organizations, particularly within legacy system landscapes.
- Experience in integrating development teams, software architectures, and codebases, ideally through mergers or integration projects.
- Possess in-depth knowledge of modern software architectures, cloud-native architectures, DevOps principles, and contemporary development processes.
- Experience in strategic management of technical debt and modernization of complex software platforms.
- Understand agile development methodologies pragmatically and effectively within a growing organization.
- Experience in leading and developing team leads and development teams, as well as building high-performing organizational structures.
- Communicate confidently at all levels, reconcile diverse interests, and build trust, especially during change processes.
- Think entrepreneurially, make clear decisions, and translate strategic goals into sustainable technical solutions.
- Experience in regulated software development environments (e.g., healthcare, medical technology, or laboratory settings) is advantageous.
