About the Role
The Casual Dispatcher is a part-time, casual position responsible for providing the initial point of contact for emergency response and community service as the college’s operator.
Responsibilities
- Answers emergency lines, police business lines, college operator lines, and direct lines to Amherst Police and Fire Departments.
- Collects and disseminates information from callers and walk-ins to appropriate entities.
- Utilizes National Crime Information Center and Criminal Justice Information System for information requests.
- Monitors fire, intrusion, panic, and other alarms, as well as campus cameras.
- Activates the college’s emergency mass notification system as directed.
- Provides emergency instructions, calls in personnel after hours, and supports the community.
- Records details in the Automated Record Management System (ARMS) database.
- Answers the Amherst College external published general phone line.
- Directs visitors and callers to campus events using the Event Management System (EMS).
- Verifies the prescheduled use of Pool Vehicles and ensures driver authorization.
- Assists authorized contractors and staff with building access and issues temporary identification.
- Issues parking permits to students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors.
Requirements
- Related experience in law enforcement, security, or dispatching.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn new software.
- Attention to detail.
- Strong problem-solving and time management skills.
- Ability to multitask.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to exercise diplomacy and function efficiently under extreme conditions.
- Sensitivity to issues of confidentiality.
- Successful completion of required reference and background checks.
- Must respond to emergencies as needed.
- Some overtime, weekend, and occasional shift change work is required.
