About the Role
Our Future Health is seeking a mid-level Software Engineer to join the Research Enablement squad. This role is crucial for building and maintaining a secure, state-of-the-art research environment that empowers researchers. You will work on systems that handle sensitive health and genetic data, contributing to the discovery and improvement of disease prevention, detection, and treatment.
Responsibilities
- Build and run full-stack systems including frontend, backend, and infrastructure.
- Develop and maintain a secure, trusted, and state-of-the-art research environment.
- Empower researchers with tools for health research.
- Work closely with internal operational teams and external partners.
- Solve complex and unique problems within the Trusted Research Environment (TRE) and security tooling.
- Operate software components post-deployment, including observability, logging, metrics, error reporting, debugging, and live incident management.
- Work with sensitive personal data.
- Collaborate in cross-functional teams.
- Communicate with diverse stakeholders.
- Mentor and coach less experienced engineers.
- Participate in and facilitate technical discussions.
Requirements
- Knowledge and experience of building cloud-hosted applications using Node.JS, Typescript, and WebAssembly in a start-up, public service, or charitable setting.
- Prior experience with Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Comfortable working with Infrastructure as Code, such as Terraform.
- Knowledge of good data modelling and design patterns.
- In-depth knowledge of relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL) and familiarity with other data stores.
- Good experience in using modern, agile development practices like code review, TDD, CI/CD, and pairing using tools like Git and GitHub.
- Experience of operationally managing software components once live.
- Experience of working with sensitive personal data.
- Experience working in/with cross-functional teams consisting of engineers, product, security, and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate with stakeholders and audiences outside your own team.
- Experience working in small, growing organisations with a high degree of ambiguity, where flexibility is valued.
- Strong understanding of software quality principles and practices.
- Comfortable in mentoring and coaching less experienced engineers.
- Comfortable in taking part in and sometimes facilitating technical discussions.
