About the Role
Dimensional is building the foundation for physical intelligence in general-purpose robotics. You will own the layer between DimOS and the silicon, making the hardware trustworthy so that everything above it can assume timing, buses, and drivers simply behave. This is a deep infrastructure seat with unusual surface area, involving tasks from writing kernel drivers to building BSPs and debugging firmware.
Responsibilities
- Design, write, and maintain kernel-level drivers for actuators, motor controllers, and sensors across robot platforms.
- Build and own board support packages for compute platforms, including device trees, bootloaders, kernel configs, and power management.
- Integrate and manage sensor vendor firmware, including evaluation, bug workarounds, and vendor negotiation.
- Own bus-level communication, including timing, synchronization, and failure behavior under load.
- Maintain custom kernel builds, including patching, configuring, and upgrading kernels with real-time requirements.
- Make firmware CI-able through HIL rigs, replayed bus captures, and mocks.
- Write production pull requests into the open-source DimOS repo.
Requirements
- 5+ years of embedded systems design and development in production environments.
- Experience writing and shipping kernel-level device drivers for actuators, motor controllers, or comparable real-time peripherals.
- Proficiency in real-time reasoning, including latency budgets, scheduling, priorities, and graceful degradation.
- Depth in bus and driver experience across CAN, UART, SPI/I²C, Ethernet, and USB.
- Experience with custom kernel configuration, patching, and building for embedded targets.
- Experience building board support packages (BSPs), including device trees, bootloaders, and Yocto or Buildroot pipelines.
- Experience working with sensor vendor firmware, including integration, protocol debugging, and firmware updates.
- Proficiency in instrument-level debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG/SWD, and kernel logs.
- Strong written English and comfort with fully async, distributed collaboration.
