About the Role

This is a paid, 12-month, fixed-term journalism cadetship with Guardian Australia, commencing in February 2027. It offers an opportunity to gain experience in creating content for Guardian Australia, including formal training and mentorship.

Responsibilities

  • Receive formal journalism training in news writing, news gathering, and court reporting.
  • Gain practical experience producing content for various Guardian Australia departments.
  • Rotate through editorial departments under the guidance of senior editors.
  • Generate original content and cover stories innovatively.
  • Engage with the audience, interact with readers, and use their input as source material.
  • Learn to develop story areas, make contacts, and break exclusives.

Requirements

  • Demonstrable interest in journalism or practical experience in journalism.
  • Tertiary qualification (not necessarily in journalism) is optional.
  • Demonstrated interest in writing, including published work.
  • Good knowledge of racial issues in Australia and their historical impact on communities.
  • Exposure to, interest in, or willingness to learn about digital platforms and fast-paced news environments.
  • Familiarity with Guardian Australia stories and values.
  • Willingness and desire to learn and be mentored, with a curious mindset.
  • Familiarity and ease with social media; video and audio experience is a bonus.
  • Good knowledge of news, current affairs, and media law.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple tasks.
  • Good writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must identify as Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
  • Must be based in Sydney or willing to relocate to Sydney.
  • Must be available to work full-time hours for the duration of the cadetship.
  • Must be willing to work over a seven-day roster with early starts or late finishes.
