  • Manage research performance by evaluating quality and pace, providing feedback, and coaching researchers.
  • Set and maintain priorities by translating the Research Director's vision into concrete team objectives.
  • Drive planning and accountability by owning project management, ensuring clear ownership and deadlines, and tracking completion.
  • Build a strong team culture by shaping norms, resolving conflict, supporting morale, and facilitating communication.
  • Write and contribute to papers.
  • Hire researchers and interns as the team grows.

Requirements

  • Ability to quickly learn literature and track developments.
  • Ability to propose new, promising experiments and subdirections.
  • Precise reasoning about subtle conceptual distinctions.
  • Track record of strong published research.
  • Research execution: ability to validate experiments, reproduce results, and identify flaws in junior researchers' work.
  • People management skills: ability to manage performance, coach, and build team culture.
  • Project management skills: organization, ability to keep work on track, and hold people accountable.
  • Sharp, conscientious, and strong communication skills.
  • Genuine collaborator with low ego and motivated by the mission of making AI safe.
  • Potential candidates may have a strong research record and mentoring experience, even without formal management titles.
