About the Role

The Factory NYC is a custom fabrication and production company seeking a Production Estimator to determine the cost of building client projects, including museum exhibits, brand activations, and luxury retail environments. This role is crucial for establishing the company's pricing foundation and ensuring projects are feasible within given timelines and capacities.

Responsibilities

  • Review drawings, specifications, and scope, and request clarification for undefined elements.
  • Break down scopes into buildable components and assign costs per trade.
  • Determine fabrication methods, material selection, and the use of vendors or subcontractors.
  • Cost materials, machine time, vendor scope, logistics, installation, and strike.
  • Identify and escalate potential bottlenecks and schedule risks to the Director of Production.
  • Consult with department managers on build approaches for larger jobs.
  • Cost change orders with rigor and within deadlines.
  • Transfer estimates to production, ensuring clear communication of intent.
  • Build and maintain the estimating library and cost history.
  • Reconcile estimated costs against actual costs and update future estimates.
  • Analyze cost variances and identify drivers.

Requirements

  • Seven or more years of estimating experience in custom fabrication, scenic production, construction, or a comparable build environment.
  • Knowledge of fabrication across multiple trades (carpentry, metalwork, finishing, assembly, CNC, digital fabrication).
  • Ability to read drawings, models, and specifications, and translate them into buildable methods.
  • Capability to identify unresolved drawing details before pricing.
  • Judgment regarding capacity, workload, and lead times, with willingness to address schedule limitations.
  • Experience costing materials and vendor scope, and holding vendors to quoted numbers.
  • Comfort with production and quoting systems, including AI tooling.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills for collaborating with various teams and vendors.
  • Extensive hands-on fabrication and production experience is considered.
  • Experience building or maintaining an estimating library and reconciling it against completed jobs.
  • Experience with installation and strike estimating, including site conditions, access, and crew size.
  • Ability to mark up drawings in AutoCAD, Rhino, SketchUp, or comparable software.
  • Awareness of CNC and additive manufacturing to estimate machine time separately from labor.
