About the Role
The Associate Director, Alternative Programming is responsible for developing the San Francisco Symphony’s alternative programming portfolio, focusing on creating engaging concert experiences that unite audiences and artists. This role has primary responsibility for non-classical programming, including Summer, Holiday, Film, and special events, and will explore opportunities to expand content offerings and generate revenue through new presentations and collaborations. The position also plays a key role in audience development by understanding patron preferences and ensuring compelling content for Bay Area audiences.
Responsibilities
- Program and engage artists for Holiday concerts.
- Program and engage artists for all non-classical Summer concerts.
- Program and engage artists for Film Series and Film Singles.
- Program and engage artists for special events as assigned.
- Program and engage artists for all added pops, presentations, and alternative programming.
- Explore and research expanded content for the Symphony to present, such as comedy and speakers.
- Explore and develop co-promotional relationships with other organizations.
- Pursue collaborations inside and outside Davies Symphony Hall to connect the Symphony to different audiences.
- Develop systems for collaboration with the Marketing team, including maintaining program idea repositories and artist/program pitches.
- Work collaboratively with Operations and Finance teams to plan concerts within budget and operational constraints.
- Provide detailed engagement summaries for each program to artist management and colleagues.
- Review contracts as requested by the Artistic Planning Department Manager.
- Maintain awareness of logistical details managed by Artist Services Coordinator and/or Artistic Planning Assistant for guest artists.
- Issue program updates for various non-classical programs.
- Manage ArtsVision data entry for non-classical programs.
- Submit Early Programming Tool and strawman requests.
- Collaborate on strawmen, budgets, and projections.
- Proof content for contracts and programming.
- Serve as part of concert duty rotation.
Requirements
- 5-7 years’ experience working in a performing arts organization, preferably with a musical or orchestral background.
- General knowledge of popular performing artists, bands and films.
- Excellent working relationships with artists and managers.
- Proven negotiation skills across a variety of program types, artists, and industries.
- Ability to think innovatively about artistic planning and take a collaborative approach.
- Commitment to diversifying repertoire and artists from underrepresented minorities.
- Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to professionally and diplomatically communicate and interact with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
- Strong situational awareness; able to work discreetly, independently and display good judgment.
- Valid driver’s license preferred.
- Satisfactory results of a complete background investigation.
- Must be available to regularly work flexible hours, particularly weekends and evenings.
