About the Role
We are building an AI-native operating system to compound intelligence from relationships, aiming to create a durable advantage in venture capital. This role will shape the strategy and execution of AI within the firm, turning an ongoing effort into a firm-wide advantage that generates alpha through better deals and portfolio outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Set vision and strategy with firm leadership.
- Work closely with senior leaders and teams across investing, portfolio impact, and firm operations to identify high-leverage AI opportunities.
- Translate shared direction into a focused, evolving plan tied to firm outcomes.
- Own the roadmap and results for Primary's AI product surface.
- Track progress against the AI roadmap and prioritize ruthlessly.
- Define metrics for AI's impact on firm outcomes and ensure accountability.
- Lead the development of the shared context and data layer for AI.
- Establish common infrastructure, evaluation methods, and technical primitives for trustworthy and reusable AI products.
- Stay fluent in LLMs, agents, context/retrieval layers, evals, and the broader model landscape.
- Evaluate tradeoffs across AI approaches and lead engineers credibly.
- Get hands-on with prototypes or production work when necessary.
- Develop a deep understanding of investor and operator workflows.
- Move quickly from observation to prototype and ship products that improve decisions and outcomes.
- Create tools, standards, and support for others to build agents on shared foundations.
- Help the best ideas become reliable, discoverable, and useful to the broader firm.
- Partner across investing, portfolio impact, and operations teams to drive firm-wide AI integration.
- Connect work happening across the firm, reduce duplication, and clarify tradeoffs and ownership.
- Direct the day-to-day work of engineers, analysts, and contributors.
- Recruit additional talent as needed.
- Create a culture of technical excellence, speed, accountability, and high judgment.
- Make strategy, roadmap, technical choices, risks, and results legible to both non-technical partners and engineers.
Requirements
- 7-10+ years of experience building meaningful technical products or systems.
- Evidence of ability to build and lead.
- Deep, current, hands-on fluency with LLMs, agents, context/retrieval layers, evals, and the model landscape.
- Track record of taking ambiguous, zero-to-one opportunities and turning them into adopted products that create measurable value.
- Strong product judgment combined with technical depth.
- Ability to understand users at the level of their actual behavior.
- Ability to identify the highest-leverage problem.
- Ability to know when to prototype, build, buy, or stop.
- Entrepreneurial mindset: create momentum with incomplete information, recruit others into an ambitious future, and take personal responsibility for results.
- Experience navigating complex organizations with senior, opinionated stakeholders and building alignment without formal authority.
- Energized by continuously re-architecting how an organization works.
- Crisp written and verbal communication skills.
- Comfortable moving between technical and non-technical audiences.
