About the Role

Amherst College invites applications for the HVAC Technician position. This is a full-time, year-round role supporting the Mechanical Shop by performing software work related to building automation systems and HVAC controls, including troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, programming, and installation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform software work related to the operation, maintenance, repair, programming and installation of building automation systems and HVAC controls.
  • Troubleshoot and perform maintenance services on all types of control systems associated with building automation, including information technology, safety, energy management, digital, electronic, electro-mechanical, and pneumatic.
  • Test, troubleshoot, diagnose and repair all types of building automation system equipment and software.
  • Troubleshoot and repair HVAC equipment and controls, including motors, fan coils, VAVs, heat exchangers, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, air conditioning and pumps.
  • Read wiring diagrams and blueprints and troubleshoot low-voltage circuitry.
  • Provide advice and guidance to other staff on HVAC control issues.
  • Act as a point of contact for system controls with manufacturer representatives and building automation service contractors.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair all building management systems and controls associated with heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems.
  • Perform planned maintenance programs to maintain the integrity of all building management systems.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with colleagues.
  • Conduct new installations of HVAC systems and controls for space upgrades, renovations, or system expansions.
  • Respond to and execute emergency calls on all HVAC and building management systems.
  • Be available for 24-hour emergency response.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • HVAC trade school certificate or 5+ years of experience.
  • Specialized skill training/certification in lieu of minimum education and related experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Successful completion of required reference and background checks.
  • Acceptable criminal offender records information (CORI) check.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment physical and lift test.
  • Valid driver's license and successful completion of Five College Risk Management driver credentialing program.

Salary/Compensations

  • $40 to $45 per hour
