About the Role

The Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry provides medical and psychiatric care, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for mental health patients. This role involves developing treatment plans, managing psychotropic medications, and performing a range of mental health services. Advanced training and education in psychiatric care are required, with options to specialize in Mental Health, Substance Use Disorder, or Co-Occurring conditions.

Responsibilities

Provide psychiatric care through diagnosis, clinical judgment, and management to restore, maintain, and improve mental health status.
Perform assessment of physical, emotional, and developmental status of the individual and family.
Analyze health behavior related to personality, life style, and culture.
Prescribe treatment for health problems as defined by nurse practitioner act.
Provide counseling and client advocacy.
Deliver health education to clients, clinic staff, and community organizations.
Assess the environmental status of the community and its impact on health.
Obtain patient histories and develop patient care charts, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
Initiate medical or nursing orders; interpret nursing and clinical assessments; implement advancements in patient care.
Supervise and/or coordinate the activities of patient care and/or support staff as assigned.
Review, evaluate, and document client response to care.
Assess client's medical/nursing educational needs and provide both formal and informal teaching.
Involve client, family, and significant others in the plan of care.
Collaborate and/or coordinate with other health-care providers within community agencies to provide comprehensive client care.
Support staff efforts to assess and triage patients for levels of psychological functioning and risk.
Determine the need for referral to a Psychiatrist or another agency.
Assist with psychological diagnosis and management.
Participate in Quality Improvement and Utilization Management programs and activities.
Participate in program planning, development, implementation, and evaluation.
Participate in a continuing education program designed by the Psychiatrist/Medical Director.
Participate in staff meetings, conferences, and in-service training and continuing education.
Participate in recruitment, interviewing, and performance evaluations of clinical personnel.
Perform administrative duties, including community outreach and education, staffing, attending behavioral health meetings, acting as an intermediary between other agencies, and goal setting/monitoring of progress.
Participate in peer review.
Maintain standards of care as described in Principles of Practice, protocols, and Scope of Practice.
May participate in planning programs and developing specific health policies and procedures.
Practice safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
Perform other related functions as required for agency operations.

Requirements

Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
Successful completion of an accredited Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) program with emphasis in psychiatric care.
Licensure as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP).
Registered by the New York State Board of Nursing.
Experience working with clients age 13+ (Preferred).
