About the Role
Seeking an adaptable and organized caretaker/technician/associate motivated by the ethical care of animals to contribute to Neion’s research program. This role involves hands-on care and handling of chickens and quail throughout their lifecycle, focusing on reproductive biology, including artificial insemination, hatching, and breeding, as well as avian veterinary care.
Responsibilities
- Safely handle chickens in a research setting, working with small flocks from egg collection through growth.
- Perform avian breeding procedures including artificial insemination, natural cover breeding, cryopreservation of semen, egg collection, incubation, hatching, sexing, and genotyping.
- Carry out veterinary procedures such as safely restraining animals, performing venipuncture, collecting and processing samples, ensuring lab delivery, and providing preventative and interventional care.
- Maintain biosecurity by showering into the facility, working in full PPE, and observing strict SOPs.
- Contribute to ensuring the health, environmental, nutritional, and social enrichment of flocks.
- Maintain timely and accurate animal records.
- Help ensure research areas and records meet and exceed IACUC inspection compliance.
Requirements
- 4+ years of hands-on animal care experience in a research, small animal clinical, farm, or zoological setting, including direct hands-on avian experience.
- Prior experience with artificial insemination, cryopreservation of semen, incubating and hatching eggs, and raising chickens.
- Undergraduate or associate degree in biological sciences or related fields, or equivalent industry experience.
- Extreme attention to detail and strict compliance with SOPs.
- Ability to operate with quiet confidence and competence, individually and as part of a team.
