About the Role
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides care and support to people of diverse abilities, assisting them in reaching their maximum level of independence and potential. The DSP implements personal care plans, which may include daily living activities, and maintains a safe and supportive environment.
Responsibilities
- Implement and document each person’s total plan of care, encouraging maximum independence and self-worth.
- Provide, encourage, assist, and supervise personal care and activities of daily living, respecting privacy and dignity.
- Perform and/or assist in the day-to-day operation of residences, including meal preparation, inventory, laundry, housekeeping, and supply purchasing, involving individuals as much as possible.
- Perform medical/health-related functions, including medication administration, upon completion of AMAP training.
- Implement prescribed therapies or treatments as ordered by licensed professionals.
- Transport and/or escort individuals to programs, medical appointments, and other activities.
- Accompany individuals and assist them in participating in community activities.
- Comply with all state, federal, and agency policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Maintain records of individuals served, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and updating.
- Operate agency vehicles in compliance with policies and traffic laws, and document vehicle maintenance.
- Manage individual funds and petty cash, and ensure appropriate use of property and equipment.
- Assist in the coordination, participation, and documentation of individual meetings.
- Maintain a calm, tolerant, kind, courteous, and accepting environment.
- Provide and ensure a safe work/living environment, complying with safety policies and regulations.
- Attend required trainings, meetings, and maintain all required certifications.
- Participate in staff meetings and mandatory meetings.
- Perform behavior management (SCIP) when necessary, using appropriate techniques and in compliance with policy.
- Foster community inclusion by involving individuals in planning and implementing recreational and leisure activities.
- Remain aware and respectful of individuals’ rights and responsibilities, reporting any concerns of harm, mistreatment, or rights restriction.
- Work at any/all residences as requested to ensure appropriate coverage.
- Participate as an active member of the individuals’ program team.
- Demonstrate flexibility of schedule to ensure individual care and program implementation.
- Perform other related duties as requested by supervisor.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED preferred; background experience may be considered in lieu of education.
- CPR/First Aid Certification (training provided)
- AMAP Certification (training provided)
- SCIP Certification (training provided)
- Program specific training (provided)
- Valid NYS Drivers License acceptable to Agency Insurance standards/depending on program needs.
- Maintain valid insurance and provide insurance card if using your own vehicle.
- Ability to exhibit/maintain a professional, kind, courteous and patient manner at all times.
