About the Role

We are seeking a dynamic and skilled Principal Policy Officer to join our Strategy and Policy Team. This role involves working with local and national government stakeholders, requiring strong networking, stakeholder management, planning, and project management skills. The position offers a fast-paced environment where adaptability and the ability to deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines are essential. Extensive knowledge of skills and employment policy in London, nationally, and internationally is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead skills and employment/economic development strategy and policy development in London.
  • Collaborate with local and national government stakeholders to develop shared policy positions and lobbying priorities.
  • Play a central role in the GLA’s work on devolution and support the integration of related efforts within the GLA and its group.
  • Brief the Mayor’s Office on employment and skills policy in London and national government policy responses.
  • Ensure the implementation of employment and skills commitments from the Mayor’s Manifesto, London Growth Plan, and Inclusive Talent Strategy.
  • Manage GLA relationships with local and national government stakeholders.
  • Identify and develop options for the Mayor to influence and promote London-specific activity by delivery organizations.
  • Provide high-quality client support for senior stakeholders, including drafting responses to Mayoral questions and correspondence.
  • Provide concise briefings and responses to questions.
  • Manage meetings and provide secretariat functions for key meetings.
  • Represent the GLA at external events and meetings.
  • Provide timely responses to the London Assembly’s scrutiny function.

Requirements

  • Substantial knowledge of economic development policy with particular expertise in skills and employment policy.
  • Proven track record in a high-profile organization of influencing and shaping policy and ensuring its implementation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of, and ability to operate successfully at a senior level in a complex organizational or political environment.
  • Experience of project-based work, including planning and monitoring delivery against plans.
