About the Role

The Assistant Director is responsible for career advising and counseling for current students and recent alumni, designing and administering internship programs, employer relations and partnership development, and creating and delivering programming to prepare students for successful experiential learning, career, and graduate school outcomes. This role collaborates with campus faculty, staff, and university-wide colleagues to deliver an integrated, high-quality student experience aligned with the broader mission of experiential learning.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized career counseling and coaching on career exploration, decision-making, self-assessment, goal setting, job/internship/experiential search strategies, resume/cover letter development, interview preparation, and graduate/professional school admissions.
  • Utilize evidence-based career development frameworks and assessment tools to support students.
  • Present career development programming to first-year students during New Student Orientation.
  • Update and maintain digital career guides, resources, and platforms including Career Launch Academy, GoinGlobal, CareerShift, Handshake, and Career Connection/NU Works (Symplicity).
  • Develop, cultivate, and maintain employer relationships and networks to expand opportunities.
  • Build and manage a pipeline of employer partners, focusing on industries relevant to student populations.
  • Oversee databases of jobs, internships, and volunteer positions; manage employer events; and engage faculty for employer classroom visits.
  • Collaborate with university-wide colleagues to align employer engagement strategies with institutional priorities.
  • Track, analyze, and report on employer outreach, partnership activity, and program outcomes.
  • Design, develop, and deliver career workshops and programs on resume writing, interviewing, job search, networking, LinkedIn, graduate school preparation, and other relevant topics.
  • Initiate special programming and projects responsive to student needs and market trends.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and student organizations to design and deliver integrated career development programming.
  • Manage communications across social media and campus engagement platforms; develop content promoting programs, events, and success stories.
  • Plan and execute large-scale office events and contribute to division-wide programming.
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and develop work-study students and other staff/student employees.
  • Manage the EECD marketing and events intern.
  • Lead program assessment efforts, including designing, distributing, and analyzing surveys and conducting needs assessments.
  • Identify opportunities for operational improvement and recommend enhancements to policies, procedures, and service delivery models.
  • Serve on campus and university committees as a representative of EECD.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Career Development, Student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field preferred; equivalent education and industry experience considered.
  • Minimum of four years of progressive experience in career services within a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated experience providing individual career counseling across a broad range of career and employment issues.
  • Experience designing and delivering career-related workshops and programs for diverse student populations.
  • Knowledge of employer recruiting strategies, job market trends, and occupational/career information sources.
  • Knowledge of graduate and professional school admissions processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of career development theory, counseling approaches, career decision-making frameworks, and job search methodologies.
  • Experience in internship program administration or experiential learning program management preferred.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, employers, and alumni.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in public presentation and facilitation.
  • Proficiency with career services technology platforms, including Symplicity/Career Connection.
  • Familiarity with Handshake, Salesforce CRM, or similar platforms is a plus.
  • Proficiency with social media platforms and engagement.
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, student-centered environment.
  • Commitment to data-informed decision-making and program assessment.
