About the Role
We are an applied AI lab building end-to-end software agents, including Devin, the first AI software engineer. This role focuses on solving hard open problems in applied AI, building reasoning agents, and shipping systems for products used by millions of developers.
Responsibilities
- Build core agent infrastructure: Design and ship systems for long-horizon task execution, including tool use, context management, multi-step planning, subagent orchestration, and sandboxed code execution.
- Improve Windsurf as an AI-native IDE: Contribute to editor intelligence, agent-in-the-loop workflows, real-time code understanding, and developer experience.
- Close the loop between models and products: Work with researchers to translate new model capabilities into shipped features and provide feedback for training prioritization.
- Own reliability and performance at scale: Build systems to handle millions of agentic tasks with low latency and high reliability.
- Move the category forward: Have input into future product development and strategy for AI software engineering.
Requirements
- Systems engineering depth: Experience building reliable, performant distributed systems with strong opinions on correctness, failure modes, and production behavior.
- Product instinct: Care about user experience and have shipped products used by real people.
- Comfort with ambiguity: Ability to make progress on hard problems with incomplete specifications and learn quickly.
- Velocity without shortcuts: A track record of shipping quickly while maintaining high code quality.
- Curiosity about agents and AI: Understanding of LLMs, agent failure modes, and reliable AI system behavior.
- Strong Python proficiency: Ability to write clean, well-structured Python and manage large production codebases.
- Relevant industry experience: Prior experience at a frontier AI lab, applied AI company, or developer tools company.
- Degree from a top-tier university: BS, MS, or equivalent in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related technical discipline from a highly selective program.
