About the Role
The Senior Accountant ensures the financial health and regulatory compliance of the organization. This role oversees daily accounting operations, including treasury management, monthly financial reporting, internal control maintenance, and audit workpaper preparation. This position bridges programmatic needs and financial realities, empowering leadership to make mission-driven decisions.
Responsibilities
- Generate monthly and quarterly financial packages, including Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities, and budget-to-actual reports.
- Draft dashboards and variance explanations for finance leadership.
- Perform month-end and year-end closing activities.
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts and credit card payables.
- Analyze financial performance and explain budget variances.
- Assist in preparing annual operating and program budgets.
- Perform month-end and year-end close procedures, fixed asset schedules, and deferred revenue calculations.
- Assist in preparing audit schedules, Form 990, and other regulatory filings.
- Ensure all financial and accounting operations strictly comply with non-profit GAAP.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain strong internal controls over financial transactions.
- Support annual external audits and prepare audit schedules.
- Prepare all workpapers for the CFR.
- Complete and submit New York State CFR.
- Assist with preparation of annual information returns and other regulatory filings.
- Partner with the Development/Fundraising team to record donor contributions correctly and assist leadership with organizational budget forecasting.
- Partner with Contracts department to ensure accuracy of reimbursable expenditures and process adjustments as necessary.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- 5+ years' experience of progressive accounting experience.
- High attention to detail, strong analytic skills and the ability to multi-task.
