About the Role

The Department of University Police and Public Safety at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time University Police Officer 1. University Police Officers enforce all New York State and local laws and the Student Code of Conduct on the grounds of the State University of New York, possessing full police officer powers and performing a full range of professional police duties.

Responsibilities

• Patrols an assigned area on foot, bicycle, motor scooter, car, or other means to deter criminal activity and detect dangerous situations.
• Responds to calls for assistance to ensure adequate protection of persons and property.
• Responds to various situations including burglaries, robberies, assaults, medical emergencies, accidents, and fires.
• Reports to the scene of a crime or disturbance to halt crimes, arrest violators, maintain order, and arrange care for injured persons.
• Administers first aid and summons ambulances.
• Conducts initial investigations to preserve and gather evidence, interviews witnesses and suspects, and reports findings.
• Testifies in court regarding investigations.
• Regulates pedestrian and vehicular traffic, enforces traffic laws, issues warnings, tickets, and summonses.
• Patrols parking lots and campus roadways, ticketing vehicles in violation of campus rules.
• Controls crowds at events, staffs entrance ways, and breaks up fights.
• Operates screening devices to inspect individuals and items for prohibited items.
• Receives and interprets communications, including radio, telephone, and email.
• Dispatches officers to incident scenes.
• Issues parking permits and collects fees and fines.
• Utilizes electronic devices such as personal computers and video recorders.
• May patrol high crime areas with a trained police dog.
• Gives commands to a police dog to halt criminals, disperse crowds, and guard arrestees.
• May give demonstrations on the use of police dogs.
• Responsible for the care, feeding, and maintenance of a police dog.
• Prepares shift summary reports, logs, and records.
• May deliver in-service training and community educational programs.
• Obtains and maintains re-certification in training areas such as defensive tactics, use of force, and firearms.
• Serves as a Field Training Officer or instructor.
• Provides training and education to personnel and the public, and engages in crime prevention activities.

Requirements

• Must possess full police officer powers under Criminal Procedure Law, Section 1.20(34)(s).
• Must be charged with the performance of the full range of professional police duties.
