About the Role

As Head of Education & Innovation, you will have overall personnel and operational responsibility for implementing GermanDream's education and project portfolio. You will provide disciplinary leadership to your assigned operational staff and create the conditions for them to implement their projects independently and reliably. You will translate overarching goals and professional, impact-oriented, and financial guidelines into clear priorities, realistic resource decisions, and viable work structures, while keeping the entire portfolio in view and intervening when capacities, requirements, or responsibilities do not align.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop assigned operational staff disciplinarily, ensuring clear expectations and areas of responsibility.
  • Empower staff to independently manage their projects and make decisions within their scope of responsibility.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one, feedback, goal, probation, and development discussions.
  • Support staff in their development and agree on concrete development steps.
  • Address performance issues, conflicts, overload, and ambiguities early and decisively.
  • Proactively plan personnel needs and participate in recruiting and hiring decisions.
  • Manage onboarding, role changes, handovers, and departures to preserve knowledge and work capacity within the team.
  • Maintain an overview of ongoing projects, milestones, targets, capacities, dependencies, and risks.
  • Translate overarching goals and established guidelines into concrete priorities for the operational team.
  • Plan capacities, responsibilities, and cover across projects and task areas.
  • Regularly assess the realistic alignment of workload, project requirements, and available resources.
  • Make cross-project prioritization and resource decisions within the agreed framework.
  • Ensure project managers can steer their initiatives according to clear plans, responsibilities, and decision-making processes.
  • Identify imbalances in projects, capacities, or framework conditions early and initiate corrective actions.
  • Ensure reliable information, representation, and escalation structures.
  • Ensure that agreed professional standards, impact approaches, project goals, and funding requirements are considered in operational implementation.
  • Involve professionally responsible roles early in relevant project and decision-making processes.
  • Ensure that experiences, data, and feedback from implementation are available for evaluation, learning, and further development.
  • Translate derived changes into realistic workflows, plans, and resource decisions together with responsible roles.
  • Make new and further developed educational approaches operationally feasible and support their piloting and anchoring.
  • Identify recurring structural obstacles and develop implementable solutions together with responsible roles.

Requirements

  • Several years of experience in disciplinary leadership and team development, ideally in a project-driven environment.
  • Practical experience with feedback, goal setting, personnel development, performance management, and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to lead a team with diverse professional responsibilities and expertise.
  • Experience in the overarching management of multiple projects or a complex project portfolio.
  • Ability to translate overarching goals and professional guidelines into concrete priorities, responsibilities, and actionable work structures.
  • Ability to identify when workload, responsibilities, and available capacities do not align.
  • Ability to assess resource and goal conflicts, make decisions, and represent them comprehensibly.
  • Lead clearly and decisively without micromanaging.
  • Ability to conduct difficult conversations in a structured manner and provide orientation in dynamic situations.
  • Good understanding of project management, resource planning, and budget/funding logic.
  • Experience in developing processes, responsibility structures, or forms of collaboration.
  • Interest in democracy education, participation, and social cohesion.
  • Work in a discrimination-sensitive, inclusive, and values-based manner.
  • Very good German language skills (written and spoken). Good English skills are an advantage.
  • Experience in an educational organization, NGO, social enterprise, or comparable project-driven environment, as well as in accompanying change processes, is an advantage.
  • You do not need to have the deepest technical expertise in every educational project. It is crucial that you can contextualize different professional perspectives, effectively involve the responsible experts, and ensure reliable implementation across the entire portfolio.
