About the Role
This position is responsible for counseling, advising, and providing professional development resources to law school students seeking non-JD degrees (LLM, MLS), and for advising alumni in their job searches. The role also involves assisting hiring alumni with job postings and filling positions, with the flexibility to provide JD student advising as needed. The selected candidate will assess current programming, articulate a vision for mentoring and alumni engagement, and integrate this vision into the Career Development Office (CDO).
Responsibilities
- Counsel and coach LLM students on professional development and job opportunities in the U.S., bar admissions requirements, and the U.S. legal market.
- Design and deliver trainings/workshops/programs for LLMs on self-initiated job search, interviewing, and professional relationship cultivation and networking skills.
- Create and maintain relationships with alumni to optimize professional opportunities for students and foster connections with current students.
- Provide one-on-one counseling to LLM students, including reviewing application materials and offering interview preparation.
- Manage LLM involvement in off-campus job fairs and other opportunities.
- Prepare career-related handouts, materials, and website/intranet content for the LLM student community.
- Collaborate with other campus departments, such as Global Programs.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of career programming using student outcomes and class demographics.
- Recommend enhancements to career development services for non-JD students and alumni.
- Identify new employer and alumni engagement opportunities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean of Career Development.
- Provide additional support for career development for other non-JD degree candidates.
- Conceive and implement support under the direction of the Assistant Dean and in coordination with others responsible for implementing non-JD degree programs.
- Emphasize support that can be provided online, in a group setting, or as part of existing programming.
- Provide support for alumni job seekers and employers.
- Advise and counsel alumni job seekers (outside the recent graduate class).
- Liaise with alumni seeking to fill positions through alumni job seeker outreach and conceive of other programming to improve this support.
- Develop and maintain relationships with alumni and employers to expand employment opportunities for students and graduates.
- Work closely with the Advancement Office to develop programming and/or resources to distribute job opportunities to alumni.
- Provide support for JD students as needed.
Requirements
- JD degree and at least three years of legal practice.
- Demonstrated experience in delivering group presentations and in preparing career-related educational materials or programming.
- Minimum one year of group and individual career counseling experience in a law school, another institution of higher education, or other legal environment (preferred).
- Knowledge of the legal employment market in California (preferred).
- Experience working with diverse communities (including through counseling, outreach and programming) (preferred).
