About the Role
U-Period instructors lead non-credit elective courses for up to 20 high school students, encouraging exploration of new skills and interests without formal grading. Candidates need enthusiasm, subject-matter expertise, and the ability to foster a positive, student-centered classroom culture.
Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive activities for a diverse student body.
- Maintain an active, supportive, and structured classroom environment.
- Communicate regularly with the Dean of Student Activities regarding needs and requirements.
- Track and submit receipts for pre-approved class supplies.
- Maintain visual supervision and responsibility for student safety.
- Accurately log all hours worked, including prep time.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree OR at least 2 years of professional/practical experience in the relevant field.
- Demonstrated experience teaching, mentoring, or working with high school-aged youth.
- Strong alignment with the goals of the U-Period program and Urban School's mission.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Must reside in and be legally authorized to work in California.
- Satisfactory completion of a Live Scan fingerprint background check.
- Completion of mandatory Child Abuse Mandated Reporter training.
- Valid TB risk assessment/clearance.
