About the Role

The NYISO's Co-Op Program offers students hands-on experience in understanding New York's bulk power system, wholesale electricity markets, and emerging grid technologies. This co-op project supports the assessment of Advanced Power Flow Control (APFC) technologies, specifically a modular Static Series Synchronous Compensator (SSSC), and their representation within NYISO market and power system models. The role involves analyzing the device's behavior and its representation within the NYISO Business Management System (BMS) framework, providing exposure to transmission modeling, power system operations, and electricity markets.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Research & Engineering team to understand NYISO transmission modeling practices and the Business Management System (BMS) framework.
  • Assist in the development and execution of simulation scenarios used to evaluate the device’s behavior.
  • Support baseline case development and implementation of transmission impedance adjustments in test environments.
  • Execute and analyze SCUC, RTC, and RTD simulation studies.
  • Evaluate impacts on power flows, shift factors, transmission constraints, dispatch outcomes, and market results.
  • Organize project findings, document results, and prepare technical summaries and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with Research & Engineering, Market Operations, and Grid Operations staff throughout the project.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Operations Research, Computer Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative reasoning skills.
  • Experience with data analysis, programming, or modeling tools such as Python, MATLAB, Excel, or similar software.
  • Interest in power systems, optimization, grid operations, or electricity markets.
  • Ability to interpret technical information and communicate findings effectively in both written and verbal formats.
  • Coursework or experience related to power systems, optimization, or energy markets is a plus.
  • Must be local to the Albany, NY area.
  • Successful completion of a drug screening and background check.
